If your lens is more than a couple years old Canon will not repair it. I have used Royal Camera out of Illinois. It took about 3 weeks but the repair was done well as far as I can tell.

Who told you that? I've sent lenses that were 15+ years old to Canon for repairs. Also, OP is in NY and Authorized Camera Repair is in PA, and possibly one of the best independent camera repair shops in PA and it's a lot closer to NY than IL so shipping would be less expensive.

There are a couple of questions that I would like to ask.

How old is the lens? Is it still in warranty?
What kind of repair is needed? Do you estimate the repair to be $2000 or more? Would you rather buy a new or refurb lens instead?

If it were still in warranty it should go to Canon, since they do warranty repairs. OP never mentioned EF or RF but is probably EF and new ones cost under $2000 and good used ones under $1000. From personal experience, if the lens requires a complete disassembly and parts, Canon charges around $600-$700 to repair a lens that costs around $2000 to replace. Unless the lens is really beat up, age for that lens shouldn't be an issue.

The two places I use for Canon lens repair are Canon and Authorized Camera Repair in Willow Grove PA.

The 1st time I saw the "hidden" arrow was the 1st time I saw the FedEx logo. I didn't realize it was supposed to be hidden because it is quite obvious.

Apparently you are as big of an Apple fan as I am. I've never owned an Apple product and probably never will.

I had an issue with Adorama over a inexpensive item and got run around from hell for no reason. Would NEVER USE THEM AGAIN

I've never had a single problem with Adorama, ever, and will buy from them again, if they have what I want and the price is right.

If the quote came back to me that it was going to cost 650 bucks I would have bough a new (or used) lens and I would have taken it apart to see if there was some kind of short and see if I could self repair.

The lens I'm referring to cost around $2400 new. For $650 Canon disassembled the lens, cleaned all the parts, replaced all the worn and damaged parts, reassembled the lens and shipped it back to me. I shipped them the lens on a Wednesday overnight shipping and I had the lens back the following Monday. The lens worked flawlessly and still does several years later. Considering I bought the lens used years ago for $1000 and used it almost daily for several years before it failed, and ended up with a lens in like new condition, except for a few blemishes in the light grey paint, they even cleaned the crimson band, I believe it was $650 well and wisely spent.
Not many people have the necessary tools or skills to properly work on precision made lenses, and Canon has both, not to mention parts, which I just mentioned. Not only did the $650 buy me an excellent and timely repair, it bought me peace of mind knowing the lens was repaired correctly and will last for years to come. I currently have the lens mounted on one of my R7's, with an adapter, and it works great. Again, $650 well and wisely spent.

We do not get Blue Jays real often near our home in northern Minnesota, and I enjoyed his colors against the fall leaves. I took the image with a Sony RX10 IV bridge camera at about 500mm (35mm equivalent). This is my first try at a post, so fingers crossed I did it correctly.😊

Yeah, they're not at all common that far west. They are very common here in Pennsylvania and they're here year round. I've probably photographed more Blue Jays than any other bird. I really like the coloring, and they have no blue pigment in them at all.
You got an excellent photo of a really pretty bird.

Nice. I restored a 1947 Dodge pick up years ago. It's a lot of work but the end results are worth it.

Does anyone has any opinion or experience purchasing camera equipment from 42nd Street Photo?

I have purchased stuff from them but they are notorious for constantly trying to up sell you or pull the old bait and switch. There are plenty of places with good prices that have far better reputations.

Have had this lens for several years... no problems, but when i pulled it out of my camera bag to use it recently, the autofocus failed...cleaned the contacts and tightened mount screws...worked twice then stopped again...for good this time. Other autofocus lenses work fine [ie. not the camera, a 5D4]. autofocus on 70-200 also does not work on a second Canon [7D]..ie. it's the lens... any suggestions? thanks for any advice. have not called Canon support yet. casey

The last time I had a Canon lens fail like that, the insulation on the ribbon wiring harness had worn from use and shorted out. It cost me roughly $650 to have Canon clean and rebuild the lens and the service came with a one year warranty. It has worked flawlessly ever since.
