got it - thanks to all. I have been playing in the house with different lighting situations (not ideal but close enough for now) and I'm comfortable holding the camera steady down to 1/40 if I have something to lean on. The pics will be for myself and my families enjoyment so for the most part viewed on a computer scree. I'm comfortable with the quality at an ISO of 6400 if needed. So my plan is to shoot in manual with auto ISO with a max of 6400 and adjust the shutter speed and aperture depending on what I want for DOF (don't figure on using a lot of short DOF's inside) and amount of available light.

Sound like a plan? Thanks for all the input.

I have done some research and the zoom lens I liked is $1600 which I'm just not prepared to do right now. I was thinking about getting a 85 but really like the flexibility of the zoom with the varying sizes of the churches/cathederals and the distance to some of the stained glass windows. I'm leaving Saturday so I'm going to experiment and see how I do before buying another lens.

I was experimenting with it as i just got it about a month ago and will be taking it to Italy and I like to shoot church interiors which don't allow flash or tripods. I was thinking shutter speed so I could control camera shake.

Auto ISO is off - I was changing the ISO with the sub-command button manually which changed Fstop (at least in the viewfinder)

I have a Nikon 7200 with a Tamron 16-300 zoom and I'm confused on Shutter priority mode. When I change the ISO why does it automatically increase the Fstop and visa versa? Since raising the ISO increases the sensitivity to light shouldn't it decrease the Aperture to compensate?

I am sure it is something I'm missing in my logic but it's giving me a headache.

Thanks - I have learned how to get rid of the noise in dark areas in Photoshop, but was concerned with the overall image quality since you can only do so much in post processing.

I am going to Italy soon and like taking interior church and cathedral pictures but this is my first DSLR camera and have only had it a month. The majority of churches there don't allow flash or tripods so my question is what is the maximum I should set the ISO for when in Auto ISO? I plan on shooting in Shutter priority or in manual so I can control camera shake. My lens is a Tamron 16-300 F/3.5-6.3 DI with IS. I will mostly look at them on the computer but would like to print something I really like at 5x7 or 8x10.
