To be effect at stopping reflections off windows / water shiny surfaces, etc. an angle of approximately 30 degrees to the camera will give the best results. For sky improvements in landscapes, the sun should be approximately 90 degrees to the angle of view. Rotating front element lenses are a pain in the butt when using a Polar-Filter.

We calibrate our monitors with various COLOR devices, spiders, etc., so that our printers are printing as correctly as possible.

What about exposure calibration?

Should you take a photo at mid noon of a grey card or sidewalk or equivalent. When you print the grey card will it match the subject in correct exposure.

Did I explain this correctly?

One more time. I take an incident reading from the grey card which is squarly facing the sun. Reading Should be about 1/125 sec at f16. Take a picture in RAW and JPEG. Download to computor, then print.

Will the print exposure brightness match your subject brightness?

If there is no match then what settings do you need to reset from your camera to computor to printer?

Since we can color calibrate our gear, how about exposure calibration?

Now, let's see, take a picture, download then print. Wawla! the print matches the subject?

Gee, All the moneys you spent on color calibrators...

???? How can you take an 'Incident 'reading from a grey card??? You can only take a 'Reflected' reading from a grey card. Get your facts right before going into print, you will only confuse others who haven't got beyond basics.

Others have given you the basics of tilt / and or shift. I also wonder why you bought the lens before knowing when / how to use it.The movements were/are a godsend in architectural work on 5 x 4 cameras.

The problem on the second picture, looks to me like 'Camera Shake'. Note how the horizontal lines show more diffusion.

The only sets of extension rings that I have used, (Nikon & Hasselblad) have written instructions on the sequence of fitting, and removal. The Hasselblad order of fitting / removal should be closely followed, or a lock-up will occur.

I bought an adaptor with glass lens to use Pentax lenses on my Nikon bodies. Works a treat, although manual focus etc., slows one down a little. Full range of distance in the focussing, and quality glass in the Pentax lenses.

Would have advised to set focus on Hyperfocal distance. But if the poster does not know what infinity is, sure as hell he won't know how to set the hyperfocal distance. My Nikon 500 mirror lens focusses beyond the infinity setting. I think it was to allow for different filters being screwed into the rear of the lens.

Lee Filters, or similar quality. Cokin, had a poor reputation of giving colour caste when used with transparancy films. The combined use of a Polar filter with a plastic ND filter, can cause problems.

Over use of (Photoshop) editing controls. The black areas in the sky do not look natural to me. They look like a mistake with a paint brush tool.

I used to be 4 for over 40 years, now retired from having to please clients more than myself. So now I can be any number I feel like.

I do not know if Cokin have improved over the years, but their ND filters were NOT neutral, and gave a colour cast. This was very noticable when using transparancy film. I changed to the more expensive Lee Filters which were neutral. One can more easily repair colour cast in computer programmes, but more of a bore with a graduated filter, and only part of the picture suffering from colour cast.

A number of posters talk as though the 'Bokeh' effect has only just been invented in the digital camera age. The effect has always been there, from the early plate camera days. Perhaps the identifying of OOF highlight shapes as hexaganol, has emerged from cheap digital lenses with cheap iris diaphragm blades. My early Leica lenses (1940's) all have between 10 and 12 blades, and as they have a curved shape, they retain a very-near round shape on closing down to f22 and beyond.

Just curious. . . How do you attach a Hassy lens to a Nikon or Canon camera, or any other combination of such different lens & body pairings?

Thanks

I have seen them advertised on Ebay, but they are very expensive.

I'm new to photography so can't give you the information for which you are looking. I feel the flowers and dog photo (especially the dog photo) are especially nice because of the clarity and smooth transition from foreground to background in each. The last two are great subjects, but the contrast is too great from foreground to background. The beautiful San Francisco skyline is almost not visible in the foreground. I have learned that a line in the photo should never begin or end in the corner.

I'm learning about High DeFinition Range photography. It creates a great DOF by combining (in a special software) 3-7 bracketed photos (from light to dark) to capture more of what the eye actually sees which the camera lens cannot do. it brings out definition in the shadows. I have seen some amazing photos using this process. Of course, they must be still photos so they can be combined.

I'm sure you will find HDR information on this site.

Keep sending your photos.

I think you will find that HDR stands for ..'High Dynamic Range' Shadows,,Mid Range and Highlights all showing detail. The bracketed exposures do NOT necessarily increase DOF. That can be done by altering the focus (not the exposure) in 'Stacked' exposures.
