Definitely calibrated the monitor.
Then make whatever changes in the image how you want it to look using Photoshop, etc.
I use Adoramapix.com for all my printing. They do fantastic pro work and save you money in the process. You can't make prints cheaper yourself and you save a lot of time besides. I have a pretty decent printer that I choose not to use anymore because of the ink and paper expense.
Adoramapix.com will ask you to send .jpg. You can ask them to color adjust, but I tell them not to when prompted. You can also download their ICC color profiles for the paper they use.
