Will,
I have the D7000 and the 70-300 lens you have, and had the same problem you are talking about. I ended up having to use the AF fine tune for this lens set to -10. It did take some testing with shots of a yardstick, and working my way down, but it has brought the focus and sharpness to where I am happy with it now. You may get different results as far as settings.
AF fine tune is in your camera Menu>Set up menu>AF Fine tune. I had the yardstick about 3 feet away from me, camera on tripod. MT Shooter may be able to help you with this and explain better than I am here.

I have a post in the Photo Gallery section (the heading is "I guess I raised a few hackles today"), where I mentioned that I am struggling with the picture quality, particularly the sharpness, with my D7000 and a AF-S Zoom-Nikor 70 -300 f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED lens. I was surprised to get a couple of responses from others that are having the same problem with the same lens. The pictures are not terrible, but I jut can not get the same sharpness of some of the others on this forum. On some of the most striking pics to me the users are using a 400 or 500 mm lens, and maybe a 1.4 or 2x converter. I realize that I have allot to learn about the camera, and about photography in general, but I just wanted to see if there is anyone here that has great success using my camera and lens, or if i am aspiring to a level of sharpness that the glass can not achieve.

Thanks - Will

I am having a similar problem. I also have the D7000 but with a Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD with a similar soft look to the pics I take. Is anyone familar with this lens and have a solution? Thank you. I thought it might be a filter issue so I bought a B + W F-Pro filter to take care of that issue.

MT is this the way it came out without PS adders? And did you use a polarizing filter to get the great color? Thank you for sharing, reminds me alot of South Dakota!

You put that in the large hole on a 45 rpm record, so you can play the record on a standard phonograph that plays 78 rpm, 45 rpm and 33 1/3 records. I hope you know what a phonograph is.

Keep forgetting, is that the one with the hand crank, or was it electric - before the safe third post in the electric plug in?

Back in the days of "Gunsmoke" "The Rifleman" "Bonanza" "The Honeymooners" "Rawhide"............yup - those were the days.

Oh yea, Howdy Doody. I love Lucy, saturday morning cartoons, bikes with fat tires, lawn mowers that you had to push and did not have a motor (just blades), Red Flyers, where the word "dope" was someone you did not like, and the words Sir and Maam were always used, wish those days were back!

Looks like the old "Hi-Fi" that was in my mother's living room about 1968/69 as it was called back then. I was about 10 or 12 years old.

If you young folk are trying to make us old folk feel better - IT IS NOT WORKING !!

Daughter is in school, I have to wait for Sturgis. About 1,000,000 bikers attend annually.
Hope you get some great shots!

Plan on going to Sturgis this year as well, have some land in the hills so I go back and look over my "investment". Black Hills gives you alot to photograph as well and am looking forward to trying out my new D7000 out there.
