Welcome to the forum, from another newbie to it. You already got some good advice, if you want to take advantage of the wonderful camera you bought. You could, always, leave the camera on Auto, and usually you will get good shots. But you have a camera now that can help you get better shots, more of the time. You just need to learn to tell it what to do. Read, ask questions, submit photos with those questions, and you will learn and ....and may the process be very enjoyable.

Thank you, justhercamera, and welcome to the forum! Glad to have you with us! I'm the crazy one here on UHH everyone will warn you about, with photos and stories of talking megalomaniac cats and wicked witches. In the main, I'm harmless, and on rare occasions, I'll even post a decent shot.

Pleased you enjoyed this one, and thanks very much for your kind comments and visit. It's very much appreciated!

Thank you for such a warm welcome. I have found that coming to the forum is one of the first things I want to do with "free" online time. I forgot how nice it was to be in a community of photo-artists. Based on your self-description and this photo, I will put you in the category of "wacky, warm, kind and talented" for the time being. :)

Very nice sets of pictures Sue. Welcome to the Hog. What camera are you using?

Thank you Rob. I made a jump in July from a Nikon D90 to a D7100. I went to have my D90 sensor cleaned at our local camera store and got my hands on a D7200.
Suddenly my beloved D90 was feeling horribly outdated, but my bank account was not welcoming the cost of the D7200. So, after some research, I happily purchased the D7100 and no regrets since.

Beautiful. One question, I see you shot at ISO 2500, f8, was that a limit of the lens, or was it for the desired DOF that you compromised on ISO?

That is a wonderful shot. A favorite combination of mine, black/white and water reflections. There is something though at the top of the photo that may be a bit of another bird, or debris or something that I wish was not there because my eye kept trying to see what it was, instead of staying with the birds/reflections.

I like the boat in front of the wall. It is interesting how boats in the UK/Europe are distinctly different than those in the US. I found myself not so much looking at the boats reflection on that photo, but studying the wall behind it. The second photo, am a bit curious why the piece of plant poking out of the top of the shot, I want to remove it. :)
I like "in yr face"... it pulls you in.

I have not spotted/viewed set one yet, but really liked first two photos in this group. Last one, perhaps the mix of objects isn't quite right as a group, not sure, but it doesn't work quite as well as the first two.

Orrie's comment about the blown out skies is true, something I missed because my eyes went elsewhere. On the photo of mom/baby, in order to get the exposure without blowing out the sky, you needed either a fill flash, or reflector, or something to increase the light on your subject, and not blow out the clouds. You could have adjusted levels on your subject some in post processing as well.

Hi, I am as new here as you are. I will be happy to give some thoughts. My first question I would ask you though, is for each of the photos, what is your reason for taking them? The girls in the evening city street, there is much going on, and I don't quite know why I am looking at it. (Also, something I am horribly guilty of doing way too often, the photo is not straight, the walk over the bridge is slanting. The photo of the mom/baby is pretty nice, but I wish I could see more of mom's kiss. The rest of that photo is very sweet and well exposed (I think they all are). As for the couple with the truck, again, what was the reason for the photo? I think the weeds in front of the couple and truck are distracting from the photo. Without them, it would be a really wonderful photo, IMO.

Oh, and good for you for asking for a true critique to learn. That takes courage.
