You seem to be doing very well, what tripod are you using? I love the 600mm f/4.0 II and I shoot with the 7DMKII and sometimes use the 1.4. I do have the 2x also and could use it with my FF 5DMKII but haven't as of yet. Have you tried Live View? Works very well on still subjects. Did you find the need to micro adjust the camera to the lens? When you shoot such long distances shots there's a lot of "dirty" air that is compressed in the image. Have fun, do you do BIF too.

Live view! That's a great idea!! No micro adjust yet. With the bare 600, testing of objects 10-20 yards yielded phenomenal sharpness, so I have not done anything with MA yet. Live view will be even better. I'm using the Induro GIT304L Tripod. Expensive, but not like Gitzo tripods. I love BIF, you can check out some of my older posts.

Wow! These are great captures at any distance, let alone at 1200 mm AND greatly cropped as well. Can't even fathom how you even SAW that kingfisher to zoom in on him! And they typically don't sit still for long!

Thanks Donna! I appreciate your kind words. In the early morning sun her wings flashed and caught my eye flying up into the trees. I pointed my lens in the general direction and with a little searching got lucky quickly and fired off a few frames.

Using the Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD), the 600mm f4 IS II w/ 2X extender for a total of 1200mm...got to be so still even on a tripod. My first go around with this lens combo and way much to learn yet.

These are heavily cropped. Even at 1200mm I was too far away. See Map below. I was at yellow 46 and birds were across the shore at red "x".

Thanks for looking!

Thank you everyone! I appreciate your kind words

Here is a redo of the first shot. I think this one is better composed and better overall colors and image quality.

What is your opinion?

Today I spotted this Great Blue Heron on the opposite side of the lake shore (Sorry for the small pictures....had to crop in a great deal). I was looking through the viewfinder, waiting about 1/2 hour for him to fly.

Waiting....waiting....waiting. Back hurt, arms hurt.. The second I lift my head up and take a quick break, the little stinker flies away!! As Chris Farley used to say..."Son of A". I tried to get back on the bird, but missed the shot I was waiting for.....

As you say a rather cumbersome process but the final result was well worth it. The Download is a "Must see". Very well done.
In Photoshop you could have gone to: Image>Canvas size and then edited the given size of the original file size to add additional space to the side.

Makes sense (intellectually), I'll have to try that. I'm really bad at photoshop. That's one area I really have get my skills up. Thanks for your kind comments

He actually added canvas to the right side and then through the magic of Photoshop he was able to clone in the background. At least that is what I assume based on one of his posts. It was a great job.

Yes that was what I did to move the bird to the left and give it room to fly ;)

Not a bad shot after processing. Shows a good reason to shoot RAW. Wow, a 140MB TIF, what size would it have been as a PSD file in Photoshop?

I've never worked with PNG files other than obtaining them from the WEB and then converting them to something I'm used to.

When I saved the modified TIFF in PS, the resulting size grew to 440MB!! Thanks for your comments!

I took this picture in July at Huntington Beach, SC. At first glance it's a throw away shot, but I thought I'd experiment a little in post to see if it could be salvaged.

Taken with Canon 1Dx II with Tamron 150-600mm at 600mm, 1/1250 sec, ISO 400, f9, handheld.

I first imported the .CR2 RAW file into DPP4, used the default settings, and immediately converted and saved as a .TIFF file (huge 140 mb file). I have no idea the ins and outs of DPP4 but generally like how the pictures look with it's default noise reduction settings. Then I brought the TIFF into Photo Shop and added some canvas in front of the bird, and exported as a .PNG file (19mb). Then finally imported the .PNG file into Lightroom for some final general contrast, highlight, and sharpening and export to the final .jpeg. Kind of a cumbersome workflow, I know.

Here's the result:

The art of photography is 50% capture, 50% post processing. Take a look at Ansel Adams' work. Half the job was done in post for his famous images. Quote: "You don't take a photograph, you make it."
