Did she advise cleaning the contacts on the lens?

I've seen various methods proposed for that on UHH. You might see what the search feature brings up.

No she didn't I did that all on my own.

So little info to go by here that it brings up a multitude of questions.
Is it an AF-S lens?
Is it a "G" lens?
Does it work on any other bodies?
A picture of the lens in question or at least a complete description of it would go a long way towards getting an effective, and accurate, diagnosis of your problem.

I have a Nikon D3100. I bought a used 70-300m ED lens (non VR, from another UHH and he's aware of the problem). When I attached it to the camera I got an error message "Lock lens aperture ring @ minimum arperture".

Did that, msg still there. Dove into the user's manual for both, put camera in manual mode, nothing, same msg.

I called Nikon (the lady I got was very nice & helpful up to a point), she gave me a list of what to try. Including: removing Memory Card & battery, wait, replace and then & download update. Same error msg.

One of the things she suggested might be wrong was that I was using an "un-authorized" memory card (WTH? never had that problem before with any camera).

The only difference between the lens I have and this one (except for it being non VR) is the contacts points. My newer ones have 7 points, the older one has only 4 and is marked Nikon ED. Anyway that could be the source of the problem? (The newer lenes are marked Nikon DX)

I also cleaned the contact points because you never know.

Any more suggestions? Or am I missing a BFO moment? I think I've put everything down I've tried.

From all the pictures I've seen, looks like I'm going to have to plan a trip to the Everglades, haven't been there since the early 70's.

Decided it was too cold to play outside so I decided to practice (play) with the camera inside.

This reminds me. Some years ago I was working in a Drs office. I had a gentleman come in and we got to talking. Somehow we ended up talking about our military service. Turned out we were across the German border from each other, me in the American Army, he in the Russian Army. We both complained about the same things (he had more than I did). He had immigrated several years before and became a citizen of the US. One for our side!

Don't get me started on this (too late). The state is puting I69 from Indianapolis to Evansville, so people can "save" time getting between the two. I think someone figured out it would be about 30 minutes over a 4 hour period. Big deal. The only up side I can see is that it will get rid of some of the idiots off the back roads where we like to drive.

The same thing is going on on one of the roads out of town. They told us a few years back that it was to make it safer for the semi drivers who were going to the local papermill. Papermill closed, now it's for the grain trucks using this road for a shortcut.

They also said it will make the road safer. How about teaching people to drive like they have some sense? In the 14 years I worked in an ambulance in this area there were 3 bad accidents, one was by drivinf too fast on ice, a rollover with no seatbelt, one guy fell asleep, and one suicide,(head on into a tree).

I'm done.

Last night my wife and her ladyfriend went to see the new movie "50 Shades of Grey". I watched some TV and then went to bed around 11Pm. I awakened from a light sleep to see my wife standing there with a leather strap in one hand and a chain in the other. I thought "this looks interesting!" Then she said to me "here, you forgot to walk the dogs."

Sounds like my house!

Rarely used Nikon ED AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 D
This is a not a VR LENS. There is some greying of the barrel cover but no effect on the operation. Purchased new but not used in a while since I bought the VR version. $100.00

Kinda what I've been loking for, any problems with using it off a tripod since it's not VR. Most of my shots are not set up but sorta off the hip (see something, snap a photo type stuff)

I have Nikon D3100 and would like to upgrade my lens. For now I have a 55-200mm (and a 18-55mm). Price needs to be under 600.00. Would a 70-300mm be much of an improvement if not what would work. I don't want one as long as my are or costs more than my first new car. Something comparable to my Nikon P530 that has a 42X wide zoom. Problem with that is that if I go the full open, its a bit blurry. Any sugestions, found a couple on B&H that were priced about right.

That's how we got our cats, they just showed up, the oldest about 19 years ago (she is still kicking), that last one I found in a parking lot, somebody dumped him off as a kitten. We got the dog the same way, she kept runnning away from her house behind us and staying with us (the last time it was two weeks before anybody came looking for her)
