I use it as a B camera along with others on jobs.
As a Producer who has to shoot more now the RX100 II
is great. Good in low light it adjusts. Quite frankly the intelligent setting is really amazing. I pair it with the Sony NX30 camcorder with the floating lens and shooting is creating not setting.
Good luck!

It is great that you have this enthusiasm for photography.
I have this tarmac 5766 Velocity Compact sling 35.99 Amazon
(used to be $75) bag for a few years and used to put Nikon D700 with 28-300 zoom in it . I would ride a bike for hours with the camera sling over my shoulder. Have to adjust strap just right so it takes load off without swinging around. It is really padded but small. You can put your wallet etc and use as day pack.
That said carrying a Nikon DSLR with big lens on vacation is
a great passion if you want to do that. I use a Sony RX100 II
and a mirror less Sony Nex 7 with any lens with adaptor
or a Metabones Speed Booster.

Let's be honest. Still shooters are becoming still and video shooters. Yes I still have great admiration for the single "caught in the moment" and art photographers.
But now the still guys are using Red Scarlet's and pulling great frames. I have a Sony RX100 II a heavy metal camera that fits in your palm. I find the images astounding.
It may be that we are now in the war of firmware and post processing. Video shot for TV movies is almost 100% graded
and colored by experts. Shot in neutral settings. And the over done photo shopping is becoming the norm. Canon Mark III is said to be a little to warm and soft. But sharpened it is a favorite. I prefer a great lens and what comes out of the camera stills or video.
So what I think we are paying for now is technology.
Nikon could have made some great adjustments to the Nikon
D800. But it chose not to.
Good luck everyone.

Let's be honest the D4 is way overpriced. The day's of charging big prices by Nikon and Canon are going away. Other manufacturers are proving good DSLR's camera's don't have to be $3000 to $7000. Sony & Panasonic! GH4 Sony new 7r etc.
I read accidentally yesterday that Nikon and Canon are losing
share big time in the DSLR market. Canon is big time in the video biz (lens)so they have other buyers.
That said my own history with Nikon of having had many of their camera's for years I who own a D800. And sympathy with the horrible things that have happened in Japan.
I shoot a lot of video now and Nikon lost that battle to Canon.
To me Sony is the star right now. Because we all love our
Nikon's but it is really heavy with good lens on. Like it or not
having a more portable package is winning.
Good luck shooting.

Let's get this straight. We tell our kids to be respectful.
We want our schools to be respectful.
Calling the current President of the US names is
disrespectful.

If it is a racial thing which I suspect it
is then go see the movie a slave for 12 years.

The pipeline is bring oil embedded in black mushy earth
that has to be extracted in a very difficult process. Ecology
is not your enemy. Just look at China right now that can't breathe some days in the major cities.

Be respectful

US Feckless. Hmmm. Tell that to Osama Bin Laden.
And how the President has been decimating terrorists.
80% of American's don't want to be the world's policeman.
War with Iran would be a mess and endanger Israel even more.
Didn't you hear about Iran having it's computers for the nuclear
production destroyed. And key scientists being assassinated.
We so stretched our volunteer army that return vets are coming
home and committing suicide 10 a day. We have a 16B dollar
deficit. We need to take the world's largest economy and work on education, infrastructure, R&D a pearl in US history and
only step in when we really need to. That's not feckless it's smart thinking in this new century. You are still in the last one.

Thank your Hamtrack. Freedom requires a society that is not paranoid and timid. My belief is that my friends in the TV, news and movie world have so much crime and dark production that it has effected kids growing up and adult minds. Many major movies about child abduction even though the incidence of these crimes is at an all time low. It sells. It is greed.

It is interesting. I was shooting a Triathlon with 800 competitors for my friends first responders charity. I am not a member of the press and a producer so I don't hold the camera for jobs often. I have a big panasonic camcorder and with that rig I could do anything. People asked what station I was from. Talked to great kids who were competing and generally could do anything I wanted. For TV no rules. Shoot my kids please. Ask me a question. Media crazy!

I recall a number of years ago shooting a building in LA for a
ADP slide show. Someone yelled in my ear turned and it was an LA cop with dark glasses and he wanted to know what the f@#I was doing. I was on the sidewalk?? Not even a tripod.
Crews were all over town shooting stuff.

If we use our common sense and instincts we can protect
our children and still let them talk to other people.
Recently at least 3 small kids I don't know have said hello
to me. Maybe it's my white stubble beard and friendly manner.
I bent down looked them in the eye and said hello back.
I want to live in this kind of a world. The kids love it.
It is the community we should work on.

Thanks everyone for addressing my D800 stolen.
I have sold things with paypal and always wait for funds
to be in my account.
I let my guard down when I received phony emails with logos from paypal and ebay with detailed information. My fault.

The criminals that did this were very slick.
She asked for an additional photo front camera as distraction.

That said I believe that ebay is having this experience big time. I think they are international criminals. I will go to the local police to report tomorrow. Will contact UPS about where package was signed and dropped. I think ebay has a big problem. They do not have way for members to address these problems. They say we have to wait three days to see if funds come in. Their agents from another country dodge the issue that "this a fraud deal". Will see what happens this week this just happened. I will contact Paypal, UPS etc. I do think ebay should be pursing this. They have the clout. Believe they have responsibility.
Thanks again. Tom

I must tell you that I have been in the creative marketing business for years. Have owned many cameras, camcorders and
the new digital camera's are a bear to learn. Even with a good knowledge they can be very frustrating. What helps is google.
And forums where you find good answers.
I still struggle with my D800. Shooting good video with it
is a whole new ball game.
We are with you and have the same learning curve frustration.
good luck Tom

I am a grandfather and love to video/photo family. And a working producer who had encountered many situations like this. Being gracious and polite usually works.

My first thought is the beautiful photos I still have from my young days in NY in the streets and Central Park. Their was no problem then. I miss the sense of freedom.

The main videographer from Tony Bourdain's CNN show addressed this issue. If a person is prominent in photo he will ask permission. That is what he does. If he is in the bkgd. he just shoots. (mostly international)
I often wonder what Henri Carter Bresson or the just discovered amazing Vivian Maier 100s of street photos would be with today's paranoia.
The growth of very small high quality cameras (Sony's) seems to be because being low profile allows you to create with some freedom in the community.
The photo's I took in NY as a young photo enthusiast
are so good to look at. Even the children I shot on the great wall of China and poverty stricken children in Nepal that started me on a crusade to do docs and work for charities.
You cannot sell a crowd scene to iStock photo if you don't have a release from everyone in the photo.
Big Brother is usually politics and law that is overeaching.
Good luck shooting stills and video a great passion.

Had friend selling my gear (I am producer) on ebay.
Started myself couple weeks ago listing a Nikon D800 body for sale and auction. Got a buy immediately. Confirmation buy ebay.
Seller emailed me address to ship her boyfriend. Referred me to paypal confirmation payment email. It was their from paypal and
all the ebay details. I UPS shipped the camera for next day delivery to buy in Arizona. When payment didn't show on my paypal account and I looked at email confirm I realized I had a crime committed. ebay has opened a case but has not been very attentive to this loss of $2400. I am pretty net savvy so after getting emails from ebay to invoice this lady buyer and others I stupidly bought into paypal had received my money.
I must say with my friend (cinema guy) ebay buyer and sellers have been a pleasure to work with. This D800 was bought on ebay 2 years ago and he was a great seller. Anybody else have this kind of experience. Tom

Hello. I found this gem while researching ideas for one of the businesses I have been developing.53 pages how to photographic art.
http://www.dallasartsrevue.com/resources/How-to-Photo-Art.shtml

A camera for $100 is a very tough issue. Would like to see you with a DSLR with a good prime lens. If you are just shooting for internet display then some point and shoots might work.
The small Sony NEX series might work lowest price I think is
300-500. Good luck

This might help. But you probably know already. Saw online.
In the "shooting" menu, do you have "Role Played by card in slot @" to "Raw slot 1-JPEG slot 2"? .
That is how mine is set up and all RAW show up on card1 and all JPEG show up on card2.

I must tell you that I had a host of trouble with high end Sandisk Flash cards in my D800 The flash slot wouldn't work. Checked list of approved cards. Finally sent back Nikon came back accepting all cards.
Good luck Tom

The D800 (I have 2) has been overshadowed by the Canon Mark 111 for video. I saw a commercial in LV with camcorder and Canon shooting models at the same time. The most expensive tool was the premium monitor to see what they had.
I was told last year by outstanding DP at NAB that he uses the D800 as a 2nd camera with Red Epic etc. It matches well if you know your stuff like him. I think the video from the D800 is amazing. But the form factor of the camera with a large lens like the 24-20 2.8 is quite clumsy to handle. The Zacuto viewfinder works well. It keeps you steady and viewing of the LCD is excellent. The WB and reading the LCD is a bit tricky. And pulling focus should be manual D800 does not do video well in AF.
Good shooting
