If I were starting from ground zero I would take a long hard look at Pentax, the K3 is a wonder camera, IS, Weather proof, big finder, high ISO, steel and magnesium construction.
I’m a Nikon guy from way back, and still, Pentax gets over looked as far as I’m concerned

New here again after a long layoff. Sorry if this has been asked dozens of times but I want to buy a new camera. Price range is only about $500 or $600 at the moment. Want a DSLR, probably Canon T5, 6, or 7 or Nikon 3500. Any thoughts please? Also I see plenty of "kits" being sold with these two cameras, are they worth it?

I would strongly rethink, you can get a used Pentax K5 on EBay for less than $200, no comparison between the cameras.

No lens is better with a teleconverter. That said, you know I will plug the Nikon over anything else. It's even in my name, come on man. I have used the 200-500 for several years on a daily basis and I love that lens. I enlarge show prints to 20X30 that are tack sharp. The following are grab shots. Lets see some shots that compare from the Sigma. I DARE ANYONE, COME ON SIGMA FANS, MATCH ME, I DARE YOU.

Those beautiful pics may have won today’s internet!!

No, I’m saying buy the cheap ass kit lens, learn to use it and move up from there.

I know, I know I know...oh well

Based upon the question I would recommend an 18-55 kit lens, and a book.

Buy the 24-120, it gives you 36-180 on a crop sensor, that’s 90% of your likely focal length use. Add an ultra wide prime or zoom for those really wide shots

Because they are every filter I have for the lenses listed and the 80-200 2.8 is too tall for the case.

I'm surprised with the filters myself, Although I use a polarisor or UV for protection, digital PP forgoes so much.

I was on staff as a news photographer at the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper , when fellow staff photographer Jim Domke and the staff developed the first Domke bags. I helped test many Domke bags, camera vests and camera coats on assignments all over the world, as Jim changed and improved them countless times over the years. I have used them for decades. Jim Domke is alive and well continuing his photography career in Texas, but has long ago sold the "Domke" franchise and name to the Saunders Group. It is a brand so storied and revered among professional photographers that they still sell well worldwide.

I had lunch with Jim recently when I moved to Texas and we both showed up wearing our "Domke" camera vests, hilarious. I have Think Tank, Peak and other bags , but still have several "Domke" bags ,coats and vests that have stood the test of time. I still love wearing my Domke camera vest when I travel on airplanes, which allows me to carry more stuff onto the plane, beyond carry-on baggage restrictions. A great travel tip. Cheers

This is an EPIC anecdote, thanks for sharing

Holy Shutters! I have never seen or worked with a Linhoff. I have just heard of them. They are Beautiful pieces of equipment. What can I write? I'm just a young pup with a Canon 5D Mark IV and a Lowepro Urban Reporter 250.

Ive had 1 1/2 Linhoffs, a Teknika 4, and a Graflex with a Linhoff schneider lens. Soooo slow to use, and not in a good way, but fun for a while, good to know how to use all the tools, though.
Hopefully someday you can move up to Nikon and Domke Haha, just kidding...Linhoffs are truly all that.

I have 7 of them, 2 of them are 30 years old at least, harsh conditions have left irreplaceable patinas on them both, vacations, adventures, they are my carry on, my man-purse, even my pillow

Here’s what 30 years of sun and sand will do to a beloved camera bag, these sisters always traveledtogether, I always liked two smaller bags when on the go, they’ve held f4’s, Rolleis even a Linhoff,

It is a DX camera, put a DX lens on it, unless someday that d500 doesn't do it for you then get a full frame, you will lose on the wide end, gain in telephoto. FWIW, I shoot a 24-120 vr on my DX because I like the cropped range of 36-180mm, and you use the sweet spot of the lens. Sooo, if you're willing to give up the wide end buy the FX, if you're not, buy the DX.
