I was looking at all them replies to why you got into photography thread. Several of the answers were to have the memories and that got me to thinking about something I saw awhile back. I was at an estate auction a few months back and there were lots of boxes piled together. I came upon a box that was full of photos, photo albums and cards a woman had saved for many years. I started to look through some of them and they were family photos. I know the person whose estate it was had children and yet that had just taken all those family memories of them and their parents and sent them to be dug through by whoever was the highest bidder. To me it was just sad that they would get rid of all those memories. (maybe they had scanned all of them or something, but I know I could never take any of my family photos and do that. To me they are too precious even if I have them scanned into my computer. )

Oh I DO agree with you. I've seen pics set out at auctions, also, seen lovely pictures and portraits in "antique" and junk shops. I actually HAVE a photo album of lovely things that I found sitting out by a trash can. I want to figure out a way to see if I might find anyone who recognize them. I am Deaf, and pictures--especially the old ones--are to me like orchestra music was to my Mom!!!

I have few how to books from '51 to '92. They all say to dry in the sun. Also, wash or soak, depending on what is stained, with hot soapy water and lemon juice and salt The earliest says if the stain is "old, bleach with hydrogen peroxide, rinse well"; others say simply to "moisten" with lemon juice and salt. If you wash, ad a 1/2 cup of liquid lysol to the water. If you're cleaning leather, use equal amounts water & rubbing alcohol. '92, '93 just says use "chlorine beach diluted according to label instructions". Readers Digest says to use 1-1 solution chlorine bleach & water. Also, for "painted surfaces" use 1 c. ammonia, 1/2 c. vinegar, 1/4 c. baking soday per gallon of water..That's all I got. Hope some of it helps!

I started out with an old box camera. I can't even remember who made it. I still have some pix from it. It wasn't all that bad. That could be because some guy in Kodak"s film lab really knew his stuff. I still have an Instamatic and a few flash cubes. The Instamatic is still in the original box. My first really good camera Was a Yashicamat.

I thought i might post the most important photo I ever took with that old box camera. It is nothing fancy but it means the world to me. I had just put a roll of film in it and wanted to test the flash to be sure the batteries were okay. My grandfather, who lived with us was in the kitchen so I snapped this picture. He had lived with us all my life and I adored the man. Four days after I took this photo he passed away. I have other pictures of him but this is the way I remember him, dressed in his bib overalls.

One of the best known and reputable mail order places in the US. They have a brick & mortar store that must be seen if you're in NYC.

620 film:
