Does anyone know if they make extension tubes for a monopod to attach to the top? It would be useful when photographing birds in tree tops. I'm to shaky to hand hold the camera. No I don't want to buy a longer monopod.

I will look up my American Avocet and upload it. They hang out with Curlews on the Carlsbad beach. I was corrected on my post about the duck I had labeled as an American Wigeon. It is an European Wigeon. Very rare. The gentleman that identified the duck is a very accomplished wild life photographer an avid birder. I am honored to know him Richard Cronberg. Look at his work and we all have a ways to go in our field. povdov

How do you remove camera data, settings etc. from a photo?

Go to the Sony camera which is smaller and lighter and is very innovative. Uses ol;d minolta lenses which can get you some bargain glass that works right off he bat. Love nikon and own a 50 and 70.

Not all old Minolta lens's will work on a Sony. It focused but would not fire the shutter unless the guy at the camera store didn't know what he was doing.

Apparently, no body here uses a Pentax K5. It's smaller (APS-C) but almost at a pro level...........you can shoot ISO 6400 all day long if needed and get great results.....

Go to the Pentax forum and check things out.....the world does not revolve around Canikon.......... :)

Couldn't resist this. Your right the world does not revolve around "Canikon" but Nikon and maybe others do revolve around the world. NASA leaves them in outer space, to expensive to bring back so anyone can go find them.

Some software will provide the distance-to-subject, but it should not be used as an absolute value..

The camera uses this information for ETTL flash calculations. The camera uses sensors in the lens barrel that correlate roughly to the same markings on the lens that you can read or set yourself. It doesn't really know the distance in question, only that the lens barrel is set at "xx" position..

Most Software does not provide all the available exif data, nor do you really want that much stuff on screne.. If you want to see a particular set of data, find the software that gives you that set, but don't expect every manufacturer to do so.. It is fruitless to call a company and complain that they aren't giving you what you want - it's unlikely that you will ever talk to an engineer capable of changing it, or anybody else in the decision chain.

I think the distance in EXIF data is only on high end, the full size sensor cameras.

When opening a photo in Microsoft Office Picture Manager under properties the subject distance does not show. Double clicking on the photo, the right side shows the information. The other camera settings show how the camera was set but not distance. Is there a setting somewhere to turn this feature on? Cameras are Nikon D90 and D7000.
Thank you
Bill

ok I see where you are talking about .. subject distance is blank on mine too. I tried searching picture manager for the answer ... but didn't find anything... I'm thinking it must be automatic when you take manual pictures...the picture I checked I had taken on auto.

Are you using a D or G lens? If so, download the free program EXIFTOOL
Subject distance is listed as Image distance. I'm using a D700 with G lenses.

I downloaded the EXIF tool and tried that but it only showed the distance as unknown. I have both D and G lens on DX cameras. The D700 is a FX full size sensor camera I think so it must be the camera software and not the lens's.

Just got my a55 and am overwhelmed by it. The manual that came with it is pretty useless, or I'm too stupid to figure it out. I saw the David Bush guide on Amazon, but I'm wondering if there are any other good print reference book for me to use while I learn about this amazing camera. Thanks in advance for your help

Manuals for me are hard to understand and remember. Hands on learning is much better. Watching a DVD is much much easier. You can pause the DVD while trying it with the camera. I just bought a "Blue Crane Digital" for my Nikon and is much better than any book. Make notes from that the way you can understand it. I bought David Busch's compact field guide, as far as I'm conserned he could have compacted it a lot more. Why would anyone want to take a field guide with them and have to sit and read that most of the day?

I have a Nikon D70 which I have had several years and don't like - I never have. I want to get another good digital that is lighter and easier to use and not too expensive. I do mostly PR and more or less street photography, sometimes published. Thank you for any actual cameras you could recommend.

Nikon D5100 read the reviews.

There are distance measuring devices and no need to spend a lot of money in the building suppy center at lumber yards. Building contrators use them Harbor Freight has an excellent one, that is the one I use. It fits in my pocket and just takes seconds to use. Good luck.

I have a range finder but when you take 500 pictures a day it's better to have the info tags with the picture. Thanks anyway.

Here is your image viewed in BreezeBrowserPro. It looks like your procesing stripped most of the data or your camera did as not even the basic exposure info is shown.

You can try this at http://www.breezesys.com/downloads.htm It is written by Chris Breeze in the UK. Several professionals use this as their browser.

I kind of figured that may happen when it was cut down to email. I'll send it to you full size and see what happens. I did look at their web site and found you can try the program free for 15 days. As soon as I have more time I will do that. Maybe it has to be downloaded from the card into breeze.

I'm attaching 3 screen shots from BreezeBrowserPro. Note that this app can also display the focus points.
The flash shot shows subject distance of 1.68m = 5.5 ft; the other 2 display a subject distance of 655m = 2,149 ft.
655 m seems to be the greatist distance I see but that is nearly 1/2 mile.

Send me one of your 50D images and I'll see what Breezebrowser shows.

This was taken with a Nikon D7000, 400mm lens on a cloudy day. If this shows the distance I will look for the Breezebrowser software. Amazon does not have it. Where did you get yours? Thank you, Bill

I am not sure how Microsoft plays into the discussion. This maybe helpful, if you are trying to get the best shot and calculating how fare the subject is and getting the correct settings in your camera. Are you shooting on manual or auto? I love shooting manual! I hope this is helpful. I have a Nikon D80, there is nothing I think better than a Nikon! I always want to upgrade. Let me know if this is what you want to know:

Most of the time I shoot in aperature mode. I think my question has been answered. Now I need to get the right program to show what distance I shot the picture at for wildlife. A range finder works fine when I remomber to use it.

I have the Nikon D90 and D7000. Save your money and get the D7000. I really like it. Best camera I ever owned.
