The net. Well made . One open, one folded. Yes, bought two, ever rip a net in the middle of a good hunt? Like having forgotten a fresh camera battery. Maddening.

Thank you. Since I displayed some of my collection in a sunny lobby of the Smithsonian CBCES(AA Co., MD) when I worked there in 80's, I saw the effect of light on them. All faded badly in couple years. Papered, kept in the dark was the answer.
Found a net on eBay, have an extension contrived. One block away is a several acre stream restoration. Second year. There are numerous step pools that already have a large population of DF and other insects, frogs, gambusia, spiders, etc. A new 'natural niche' in Annapolis. Pools are small, the darners are more accessable to a net. Now if they are also slower. Of course, a camera set up. Summer has a lot of promise.
Enjoy the day, and thanks.

Any suggestions on how to clean the wasp?

A bit of alcohol on a fine artist brush and a steady hand. Many insects constantly groom. More than a cat. If live and put in a clean jar, will 'self clean'. Dust and dirt interfere with senses. If fresh, some can be put in a vial of alcohol and a drop of dish soap and sloshed, rinsed and dried. Rather than canned air(none near) I used a pipette and lightly blew. Could use a straw. Funny, collected for years, never was a serious problem before.
Careful with this macro hobby. I have noticed a tendency to take over the minds of some of us retired folk. Hobby to avocation, to??🕵️

According to an online calculator, this is ~2.7X.

I would say off to a good start.

Please forgive such a beginner’s question, but I have tried searching everywhere for an answer and not found a definitive answer. Perhaps it’s too obvious a question..

I have a 2-way focusing rail and my Canon 70D camera. I wish to take a series of photos, indoors, of an inanimate small object, for instance a button or a leaf.

I set my camera on a tripod and using live view I focus on the point nearest the camera and take a picture.

Then what...
Do I use the rail to move the camera in a very small increment nearer the object AND AT THE SAME TIME re-focus on a point SLIGHTLY further back from the initial shot for my next picture?

OR

Do I not alter the camera focus from it’s previous focus setting in any way but merely use the rail to move the camera forward?

It’s this aspect that I’m stuck on; whether I have to refocus on a further back point once I’ve repositioned the camera via the rail.
Please forgive such a beginner’s question, but I h... (show quote)

This is what I hope will work for stacking. I have a digital readout in thousands on order. It will mount between bellows frames, somehow. A table will be welded to movable bellows end. By watching the digital readout, move a bit(inthousands) at a time thru DOF. Tedious, but an auto rail is a bit pricey.
More as I go along.

I am not sure on this, but. The bloom that many dragonflies get as they age is wax. Years ago I tried oven drying specimens. The bloom disappeared. A lighter wafted by a dried specimen causes clearing of the abdomen and any white wingmarks.
Later learned correct procedure and forgot about it till now.
Another summer project, is this fact??

A composite consisting of adding a more dramatic sky and some motion blur. The blur on the bottom right is mostly from jet engine power thrust from the initial take off. Not sure if that's the proper term, but it's the only description I'm able to give. So that portion of blur is out of my control, but it did help with my addition.

The exhaust of a jet is extremely hot. And at supersonic speed. Watch for same thing in a dragster. A bit of 'mirage' effect thrown in. And the very air shakes. A long, controlled explosion. Or, exhaust on steroids.

Although the photos are beautiful, I believe you are rubbing it in. We here in the under prevalaged areas of the U.S. suffer a problem called cabinfever. It is a yearly thing in my area. It must sit worse in, Minnesota, say, but this too will pass. Of course we do not have July and August quite as hot as East Texas. Whew, been there.

A bit of warm weather so I went to hunt for insects in the woods. I found a few and then I found this Grub with what appeared to be a large horn growing out of its head. I pulled on it but it would not come loose and when I examined it under magnification it appears to be some type of fungus....or something.

If anyone has an idea of what this may be, I'd truly like to know. Strangest thing I've yet to see.

It is a scarab larva. June bug. The growth is likely a Cordiceps. A fungus. I know more, but anyone interested can Google. An ancient herbal medicine, supposed to support better respiration. This is the fungus' in or coming into sporulation. Reproducing.

I hit send too soon. Was more, but oops.
My words are to compliment. I am learning a lot here. I am not 'kind' when l prase. Your's is highly deserved.
Try getting one of the best in a large format, 24x30,say. You WILL be impressed. The detail should be amazing. I get frames for cheap at yard sales and mat and assemble them myself. The sell. Then I can afford to upgrade.
Friends are every bit as supportive as the people at UHH,and that is nice.

This is an experiment in using colored a background for staged macro photography. I used my Stink Bug as a model focusing on its proboscis.

I purchased a pack of recycled colored paper ($1.50 for 50-sheets) and put a small piece of the magenta paper closely behind it as shown in the attached photo using a third-hand tool to hold both the specimen and the paper background. I pulled the specimen out from under the light diffuser for illustration. When shooting the specimen it is moved under the translucent diffuser which is made from three stacked drink cups cut down to size (I have various lengths for different size subjects and lens focal lengths).

I've also included a photo of the camera rig and the subject positioner setup used for this image.

Thanks in advance to those who view and comments, suggestions and critique are highly appreciated.

Hello;
About a year (or more?) ago, I was asking questions on this site seeking help in making a setting on my Canon 70D camera where I could leave the camera at, and get reliable consistant and (sometimes) good images. The major problems I was having seemed to be with my ISO settings, and the auto focus.. (I am not of the "computer age" and not too computer or digital savvy...
One of the other UHH members was kind enough to show me a system where I could set the ISO to "Auto" and the other settings to various places. The system setup has worked GREAT for me, however last weekend I lent my camera to a family memeber at an event and she CHANGED every setting on the samera and now I don't remember the settings that I had it to. Her image results were mixed with some being amost totally black (it was an indoor event,) and a lot were out of focus although she did have it on "auto focus." Worse still, I'm on medications with a side effect of short term memory loss, and try as I may, I cannot remember the name of the gentleman kind enough to help me set up the system that I have been using the last few years; so that I can put the settings back to where they were. Can anyone help? Thanks.

If someone asked to borrow one of me cameras, I would ask if they needed to borrow my toothbrush. Same thing. I have given away many cameras, inexpensive digitals from yard sales. Do that. NOBODY should lend something like this. Good intentions, bad idea. Lose a friend that way.
