A couple of days ago, I took the advice of several of you and went to NIKONUSA and registered the D7100. Nothing happened until today. Their website rcognized my camera as being a registered USA warranty product. My whole concern from the beginning was will I be able to get the camera fixed by NIKONUSA. I appreciate the help that many of you provided and for the curmudgeons who spate negative comments I hope that Karma doesn't get the better of you.

Finally, I wish to apologize to BuyDig.com for doubting that they sold me a grey market product. Controversy is now over, Rongnongno.

More to the point, why didn't you register online or send in the card 2 years ago when you got it?

The first thing I do with a new camera, lens or other major product is register the warranty. If I don't already have an account with that company I set one up then register. Among other things that gets me the downloadable utilities, apps and firmware updates. Plus notifications and, yes, ads, but I have a delete key for those.

You asked the most logical question, Robert. I have been struggling with health issues the past 9 years. All of my Nikon lenses are registered. I cannot give any reason for not doing so with the camera. Mia culpa!

What a load of big girls blouses - if the camera needs repair - send it to Nikon - if they won't repair it - chuck it and buy another one . If the camera does not need repair - what the # is all this about.

I am a retiree, Mike, on a fixed income. I can ill afford "chucking" a camera and buying a new one, regardless of warranty.

Really cannot understand why people get their knickers in a twist over gray market ? save yourself some money buy a nice lens and buy gray . No problem - I dislike restrictive practices . Truth of the matter is with a 'good' gray importer you get a better warranty - most things go wrong fairly quickly and you will most likely get a new camera. Don't forget the golden rule of big companies IS IT WARRANTY OR POLICY - you will find that EVEN in the US Policy claims (like recalls) will be honoured by most major manufacturers. Ralph Nader may help you although not sure what he would charge these days.

My knickers were twisted, Mike, becuase I was concerned about getting the camera fixed (if necessary) by NikonUSA.

DZ, if the warranty period is over it doesn't much matter, it's just any other camera now.
Though I keep hearing that Nikon won't even work on an import even for a fee!
That's getting pretty low!!! Good luck
SS

That was my whole concern, Sharp, being able to get the camera repaired @ NikonUSA, not some junk shop.

Nikon and it's authorized dealers will NOT repair gray market equipment - period. Your only options are independent repair guys, and whatever parts they can get through their channels. The only way you can get a camera repaired in or out of warranty that came from a different market is to produce a bill of sale from a retailer in the country of origin that resulted from a face-to-face transaction. Otherwise it is considered gray and Nikon won't touch it.

In 2013 Nikon pulled support from the independent repair network - no manuals, no tools, no training, no parts, no support. If you have a gray market camera pray that it doesn't break.

That "is" my concern, Gene. I wanted to be sure that if it needs service at anytime that I can send it to NikonUSA for repairs. (yes, I do know that I have to pay for said repairs, for those of you who are curmudgeons. Not Gene or others who have given me advice in a positive manner.

Look at the end of the box where the serial number isshown. To the leftof the SN you will see, in your case, D7100, and directly above it you will se the letters BK, followed by the letters US. If that isn't there, it most likely is a grey market unit. I just looked at the box my D7200 came in.

There is no BK on the box, Wing, but it does have U after the D7100. Thanks, though.

USA warranty for Nikon cameras is for one year. Lenses are for 5 years.

The best way to find out if your camera is USA is to create an account at NikonUSA.com and register your camera. If it is grey market they will tell you then.

I did what you suggested, Jethro. I turns out that is a genuine USA Warranty. Thanks for the information.

Though a lot of you have given excellent advice, I did what Jethro suggested. Hopefully in a couple of days, the verdict will be in. For those of you who think that I am fighting windmills, I just want to know the real answer. Okay, so the year is up, the point is moot, however, I will sleep better knowing the truth.

Look atvthe box the camera came. It will show "US" on the space where the serial number is, if it is a U.S. Model.

I don't see "US" anywhere near the serial number on the box.

Quite frankly if you paid full price for it why did you select an outfit that you now seem to denounce?

There is one born every day. You were born long ago but that was for your not only ill considered choice of re-seller but also your willingness to make yourself appear as the victim of a fraud. Maybe you were, maybe you were not but honestly? It is your fault.

Next time select a reputable dealer.

There ends the non-controversy.

At the time I made the purchase (2013) the reviews were not so bad as they are nowadays, Ron. I usually buy from Adorama. Years ago, I did buy my initial Konica equipment (and Konica-Minolta) from BuyDig.com.

Buydig is an authorized Nikon dealer. I've easily purchased >$10,000 from them over the last decade. Never had an issue- in fact, they have been exceptional. Here's Nikon's list of current dealers: http://cdn-6.nikon-cdn.com/where-to-buy/nikon_img_auth_dealers.pdf

That's what had me worried, Shooter. I looked at that very website and didn't see BuyDig.com listed. At the time, in 2013, I believe they were.

If the first two digits of the SN are 25 thru 39 it's USA, anything else is grey market. Simple as that.

Thanks, Shooter, first 2 digits are "25". :)
