For camping, you can't beat Oliver Lee State Park. It is highly rated and if you're there on a Friday I'll lead you on a tour of the Lee Ranch House and fill you in on the local history. Oliver Lee SP is a great hub to go out and visit White Sands, Three River Petroglyphs, Valley of Fires Recreational Area, acess to the red sands for 4x4 fun, Cloudcroft for skiing and tubing. If you go to Silver City, I'd suggest camping at City of Rocks SP. It's like staying in Bedrock, from the Flintstones.

Thanks! I will let you know if we do stay there. Appreciate all the great info.

You could be driving past the 4 corners area of Colorado, Arizona, new Mexico and Utah. If so , do a google search of the area around Moab. I my opinion you could spend months traveling this arear

Not sure of driving route yet but I have spent a lot of time in Moab.

Silver City is off the beaten trail but scenic, etc. We have stayed at the Bear Mountain Lodge outside of town 2-3 times and enjoyed the area.

Bosque del Apache can be great (when the birds are coming through on their migration), and while there the mineral museum in New Mexico Tedch in the city of Socorro 9about 10 miles north of Bosque) is pretty fascinating.

Also White Sands National Park is worth seeing.

Roswell is, alas, a bit of a disappointment - a few kitschy "alien" gift shops and the alien museum, of course - good for a larf and since it's pretty much directly north of Carlsbad - about a60-90 minute drive down 285 - it still might be worth going, if only to get your "I saw an alien" T-shirt or whatever.

In fact, if you continue wouth on 285 in essentially becomes 180/62 as it hooks west and passes through Guadalupe park and eventually gets to El Paso, TX - from there you can head north on 54 to get to White Sands.

There is also a museum at White Sands MIssile Range, but I don't know if it reopened after the covid nonsense.

My URL is in my signature if you would like to see shots of New Mexico
Bosque del Apache can be great (when the birds are... (show quote)

Awesome info...thank you so much! I will investigate these areas!

Thanks again everyone for commenting, I normally don't do the close up stuff but the frost was so pretty on the leaves that I just couldn't resist!

Depending on your route, you could visit one or more of the National Parks in Utah: Zion, Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, and Bryce Canyon. Routing could of course also include Grand Canyon NP. Enjoy.

Thanks and have been to all the parks in UT thru the years...we have friends that live in Kanab - spent a lot of time in that area.
