I like to tinker so I bought a 7x10 Fresnel off eBay and done some focus tests to see what distance from the flash to the lens was required and made my box out of light weight coroplast. Works great, it will focus the flash beam on a 4' x 4' area at 100 feet.

What is the distance of the Freznel to the flash face?

Thanks for this question/conversation. I'd never heard of one but have now found one for my SB910 at B&H and have put it in my wish list for the birding photography that we do. I learn so much here!

Thanks for commenting.

It is designed to be used with a 300mm or longer lens. With a shorter lens the central portion of the image will be brighter than the edges.

Good luck with your bird captures.

Good Images, well taken. I agree, the 28-300 is a much underrated lens. It is my favorite lens for both full frame and crop sensor. If I had to have just one lens, the 28-300 would be the one!

Thanks Gobuster.

Very good set Joer.

Thanks Earnest.

I think the lens is much better than some reviews indicate.

I normally don't use this lens for birds but decided to try it.

D810, 300mm, f11, 1/250, ISO64, SB800 & BB.

i am using a better beamer for birds , and it work fine .a little flimsy, so i added a wire frame at front to keep the fresnel lens from bending .got mine from visual echoes inc [ amazon ]

Yes Visual Echoes supplies them.

I just wedged a pc of plastic between the frame and the strobe window to spread the frame out. It keeps BB lens flat.

Yes, I know. Here we go again! :)

Which is a better way to go? Nikon D7100 refurbished for $579, at Camera, or a used D300 (not “S”) for at Adorama for $289 (rating “E-)?

The D300 is built like a tank, better on the shutter burst and is half the cost of the D7100. However, the D7100 has twice the MPs and more features (most of which I’ll never use, anyway.

Both are 51-point AF.

My gut is to go for the D300 and use the extra money for better glass. But the D7100 has the EXPEED 3 sensor, compared with the EXPEED for the D300. I don’t care that the D300 does not have video, as I’m more interested in still photography.

Why even ask.

How about a tube lined with reflective material ... that is the principal of fiber optics... the emanating beam would be more unidirectional... ????

Flash lights move the bulb with in a parabolic reflector to focus the light or disperse it.

Just thoughts

The higher end flash units already do that, but I agree it could be improved upon.

I recently purchasaed Lightroom 6. I am having trouble finding them on windows 8.1 to put up on here. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Windows Vista was a lot easier to work with.

Upgrade to windows 10; its free and easier.
