Not merging two catalogs. Just copying the Lightroom folder to a thumb drive as insurance in case anything goes wrong with the transfer of all my files from my old computer to the new computer. On the new computer, I will import my catalog so that the newly installed Classic knows where it is.

Ok, I must have mixed this posting up with another. FWIIW, I keep my catalog on the cloud in Dropbox and my photos in an external SSD attached to my computer. I often back up my photos to another separate SSD and also have them backed up on Carbonite. But, after asking some folks here about best practices on file management, someone mentioned the idea of having an entire SSD backed up with photos AND the catalog. That made total sense. So now, I have an entire backup SSD dedicated to my photographs and catalog in separate folders, of course. I certainly do not have 50,000 folders, so not sure what went awry there.

Its been my experience that to use M43 gear, one must be an evil genius.

Actually, M43 does take a bit of getting used to, understanding its limitations, and its benefits. M43 users typically know the pros and cons of their systems quite well and do not try to defend them. And they typically don't get their panties in a wad if people point out the weaknesses. Facts are facts. Operating in low light is one major weakness. I do like the system, its size, the robustness of the equipment, leading edge tech, hand-hold ability with IBIS is amazing (attributable to IBIS AND smaller sensor size.) I think the eye focus probably works as well as any amateur needs. Until you are on the cutting edge of performance, I really don't think it will matter. Before I'd switch over to OM there would have to be a host of reasons why, other than eye focus.

'Twer me, I'd do a look at what exactly I use a camera for. In my case, we traveled quite a lot. So I liked M43. But now, I am using an even smaller Sony and could possibly give up taking any bigger gear with me on airplane trips. So, do I need m43? Maybe not. I may just sell it all!

A few things:

1, We should be talking about the \Lightroom folder that contains your active LRCAT file, probably copied from your old "my picture\lightroom" folder on the old equipment.

2, The new file copied to the new location should match the same number of files / folders, even is the storage used is slightly different.

3, A virus scan software will make the 'paste' aspect of the process quite slow as each new file to the target is scanned.

If 1 & 2 check-out, you're good to go on the step to copy your LRCAT to a new target.

The files and folders that compose the \Lightroom folder with the LRCAT includes mostly the image files that support the thumbnail view of your images in the Library Grid view. Then, 'index' files that relate the data in the LRCAT to these image thumbnails. This is all internal to Lightroom Classic.

my reading of this was that he copied the actual files over into a folder titled, "Lightroom." Im not seeing where LR even fits in yet. And there are something like 50,000 folders? More folders than files? Im not even sure how that could happen.

Im thinking that needs to be figured out first before catalogs...but I might be mistaken. I've never had to merge two catalogs. Thoughts?

The process finished. Took at least an hour. Almost 17 GB, 33k files. I don't understand this. I don't see many files in the folder and its subs. Are most files hidden or something?

This is a screen shot of when you clicked on properties of the folder. Oddly it has thousands of folders inside it. But this isn’t really helpful.

Go to the windows file explorer and show what the file structure looks like.

I have been using Bay Photo to print wildlife calendars but it’s the second time I have had mishaps with my order. Instead of getting 50 calendars, I got someone’s wedding album. The calendars are on heavy stock, spiral binding and printed with 6 colors. If anybody can make a recommendation, I would appreciate it. On a side note, someone received my calendars but Bay Photo doesn’t know who got them. Thanks, Fran

I used mixbook with good success. Heavy stock paper....all matte however.

I think I received you calendars. Nudies on a calendar? You should be ashamed.

I just watched a video on using a spyder color checker. You may want to look up a few examples of its use on youtube. That could definitely make your workflow much easier and consistent.

Most AF systems do benefit from settings changes for specific subject matter. There are probably some videos on YouTube for every brand and model, suggesting settings for particular subjects.

Sean Robinson of Panasonic recently did a Lumix Live podcast on the hybrid PDAF systems in the new S5 II, S5 IIX, and G9 II bodies. He does a lot of motorcycle racing photography, so he has identified particular combinations of settings that work for that, and others that work for portraits, sports action, still life, landscape, birds in flight, animals in brush, etc.

I'm pretty sure there are videos by Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Olympus experts who have refined their settings for specific purposes.

Using any camera "out of the box" is likely to be hit or miss, depending upon the subject matter.

Exactly. I am quite familiar with my Oly gear, but took a little Sony RX100 on a vacation. I was a mess. Should have practiced a lot more ahead of time. I wanted to blame the camera, but I think I found the culprit. It wasn't the camera.

How good is the eye detection compared to Nikon's?

Interested in the OM-1 to save weight but hopefully not sacrifice quality.

A quick look at some of your posts shows that you were considering Nikon 850, a Nikon mirrorless Z8, a Sony, an Oly in 2021 (as I recall), and now this. You have the gear you need to shoot BIF...perhaps it is the archer and not the arrow.

I have had all my insurance with USAA for 35 years and every few years I get a rate comparison. No one beats USAA for identical coverage.
Why? No sales people, only one central Texas location, and no advertising (until recently). Service has been great.

$40,000 camera gear covered for any/all losses at REPLACEMENT value without any DEDUCTABLE (I think, not 100% sure) at $332/year premium as VALUABLE PERSONAL PROPERTY FLOATER.

Good luck,

I have all of my insurance with USAA at this time. I want to insure all of my cameral equipment. Does anyone have esperience with USAA doing this and would you recommend them? What should I look for when getting this insurance?

I have usaa, did exactly what you are proposing on line. It was easy to do. Cost was minimal. USAA is almost always rated as the highest ins company as far as satisfaction and service. You pay for it, but so far, so good.

Since my attempts at really good editing are not very advanced: are there any labs that will work with you on editing s photo before you have them print it?

Ed,

A quick search of photography clubs in Las Vegas revealed there is a photo club there. And they affiliae with a pro lab. You could kill two birds with one stone...join a club and increase knowledge that way AND walk into the pro lab mentioned on the club's site and seek help on this particular project. What I don't see, at quick glance, is when and where they meet...but they do look active. I suggest you contact them.

I was looking at MPIX but went with Pictorem. Not only did I find their Chromelux HD sublimation impressive, but they will do custom sizes. That’s important to me because I often crop to non-standard aspect ratios.

Good to know...and there is a Black Friday deal going on there now...

Odd sizes is an important feature

https://vividmetalprints.com/ is a company in Lexington, NC, just down the road from me. They specialize in printing ON metal with aluminum dye-sublimation. Check them out! They have been around for 20 years. Dye sub is an old process known for its saturated colors.

Thx.

Let's all just forget I asked?

Nah, on UHH you have to sort the wheat from the chafe. Its like the wild west here except all the gunfighters have keyboards and most are AARP members. But I am interested in the opinions of a few folks because I intend to order some metal prints here soon. I previously used a vendor, CG Pro, and liked their product. Right now an 11x14 is $50.

There are prints on metallic papers, and then there are prints on real sheets of metal. If you want metal, it’s much more expensive.

Burk. You’ve been in this game professionally for a long time. What’s your preference and why? I’m asking because I’m going to do a few metal prints.

Thx
