Nice series of pictures Erv. It is one thing that our country is was founded on... freedom... Unfortunately and apparently does not apply to all forms of life.

Or should I say a root to support this tree. Taken at one of my favorite spots with my new Sony a7R with a 55mm prime lens. Have a lot to learn about this camera but so far I do like it and will cover most of the things I like to photograph. C & C is OK.

I like windows 8.1. I have no problems finding my way around it to do what ever I have to do. I also like the fact that it is not limited to 16gb of ram. It, like anything new, has a learning curve. I had to go to the internet to figure out how to shut it down the first time but once you figure out where to find everything it does what I want.

I am sure that Window 8.1 is far superior than the 8, it would have to be. Appears that Microsoft rushed the 8 version to market too soon. They thought Vista was poor but 8 was not any better. Windows 7 was just Vista with all the fixes in place but Microsoft chose to call it something other than Vista XX to distance the bad wrap with it, however the last laptop I had with Vista on it other than its boot up time was better than Windows 8.

When Countryman said he had problems with his internet connection, it immediately told me that his WIN8 had never gotten the critical updates necessary for the WIN8.1 free upgrade and his OS always closed down and then rebooted to exact screen it was shut down in.
I don't like many manufacturer's who load only the basic WIN8 and then give no real instructions to the user on how to customize it or get things running properly. HP loses a lot of points here as do other companies.
There was a recent critical update to WIN8.1 for all those who have completed the upgrade and this update is necessary. Please make sure you have installed this update.

As far as Countryman going to a MAC, that was one solution but an expensive one (someone got a real deal on a laptop). With regard to his display though, there are many laptop PCs that now have the same resolution and some even have bright IPS displays and excellent graphics from NVIDEA GeForce so the old addage that MAC had better displays is something gone by the wayside.

At the time I got rid of my Windows8 laptop, 8.1 was not out yet. Yes sooner or later they all catch up to who ever is in the lead at the time. I should also say I do still have a Windows 7 computer but gets used a whole lot less as time goes on. I liked it best to all the Windows versions I've had. My computer at work is a Windows XP Pro and does have it's problems at times, but there the IT group handles those moments when they have a problem.

Hi Countryman. Sounds like you made the right choice - (for you). My experience has been just the opposite with Windows 8. In fact, I was so impressed with how solid and adaptable it was, I bought it also for another desktop computer of mine. Working excellent on both. I quickly changed each one from the 'Metro' screen to the old 'Windows -start/programs' screen. (Don't care for the Metro look). The 'feel' is just like I'm working with the older versions of Windows but the results are greater speed, faster boot-up, better security, etc. so that makes TWO of us happy; you with your Mac and me with my Windows 8.1. Can't beat that, eh?

I am happy for you. DO you know of anyone that would be interested in purchasing Windows * Pro new in the box , never opened? I would get rid of cheap.

I recently purchased a hp pavillion with windows 8 having a problem with windows loading telling me it's a firewall issue but it's not anyone having the same problem? When I go to share my pictures from adobe elements it's also telling me a problem with the internet connection but that's working on my iPad.

I had purchased a HP laptop with Windows 8. I was impressed with the advertisements and checked it out and bought one. By the end of 3 weeks I was totally disenchanted with it. Sometimes when I would boot it up I could find my pictures and at other times I could not. ON the internet it was a joke. Setup your home page and it would be there for a few times then it would change on its own. Pop ups were hard to control. Long story short, sold it to a friend for less than half of what I paid for it and then bought a real computer......... MAC Pro laptop. I have it now for over 6 months and it has been totally trouble free, runs fast with its SSD drive, very long battery life and best display I have ever seen on a laptop. More expensive, yes, but to me it is well worth it.

I found this little gem at a gold panning operation near Nevada city, Montana. It's seen many years of use and although it's not a museum showpiece, but is beautiful and intriguing all in its own.

Nice shot and a lot of history. Is it an International?

Back home recovering from another cancer surgery. This isn't a new pic, but one I took several weeks before going to the hospital. Thought I would post it just to let everyone know I'm back, I'm ok, and I will be back out in the field shortly. Enjoy the pic of the barn. Richard

For those who are worried about a filter degrading the image, I will repost this test shot I did. Nikon 80-200mm lens at 200mm f8--one side without filter, the other with a bog-standard Kenko skylight filter mounted. Remember that any filter flaws are magnified the longer the focal length, which is why I shot at full extension.

I've changed to greyscale to mask slight color balance differences. Downloaded, you are viewing the files at 100%. Can you tell the difference?

FWIW I am a professional news cameraman and I can attest that filters do absolutely protect the front element of lenses. I replace scratched filters regularly, which is quite a bit cheaper than replacing front lens elements. Of course if you have lots of time to carefully clean your lenses and work in clean environments, then a filter is of less use for protection.

when I download this it appears that the picture on the right as viewed appears to me to a little brighter, or is this just me. I picked out several buildings and see the same thing. Maybe I need to study the picture some more. I am viewing it viewing it on a MAC Pro with a retina display.

Folks, the Blue Angels are here for a Father's Day weekend show. They are flying out of Smyrna Regional Airport which is only 2 miles from my house. Today I was able to get a few shots of them practicing. Some of these were taken at my house. My wife and I attempted to get to the airport before their practice session was over...but alas, they had the roads to the airport closed. I guess for safety reasons.
Now, this is my first time shooting fast jets with the HX300 so the quality isn't what it should be. I need to learn how to do high speed panning better. On a side note: They are scheduled to be in Dayton Ohio next weekend for the big Dayton Air Show. Now that would be a show to see...!

The 1st photo was shot with my Galaxy S4 about 10:30am. The 2nd was shot with my Sony A850, Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 zoom about 7:30pm. Exposure info: Rose 1 (35mm equivalents) 31mm, 1/121 sec, f/2.2, ISO 50, White balance Auto. Rose 2 75mm, 1/60 sec, f/8, ISO 800, White balance Auto.

Rose 1 looks to contrasty to me. The sky was overcast and while the rose was a rather intense shade, it didn't look that contrasty.
Rose 2 is in a neighbors yard. To me, this is how a rose should come across. There is good definition in the petals & the color is not blown out. In this case, I was shooting in full shade.

No attempt at PP.

I like #2 by far the best. Colors are more realistic than #1. Thank you for sharing..

This photo is straight out of the camera, no pp. None. Shot in RAW uploaded to lightroom. No adjustments. Just sent over to photoshop and saved as a Jpeg. There are people out here that you have to work every RAW picture somewhat. No you don't. I don't work stuff all the time and simply post after converting to Jpeg. I hate pp. That is not to say that I don't utilize pp. I do so way more often than not.

My camera is not even top of the line. I shoot with a Sony a580 and in this case, I used a kit lens.

Great picture. Colors are wonderful. I am not big on PP neither. I just recently have added a Sony a7R to my gear and I think I will try what you have done...

As a tribute to those who flew their missions on D-Day, I put together some of the aircraft that flew on D-Day. My way of saying "Thank You" for your service.

Some of these are repeat photos I have posted before but it is fitting they be placed in here.

Oh so nice to see.. Great shots.. Thank you for sharing..
