Love this type of picture and this is a "goodie"! Wonderful detail, colors, and exposure. The uniform sharpness is a plus and the lack of blown-out highlights on the leaves a bonus. Nice job...

Pro they are not but then you are trying so the pro has to be the master of all things in photography. You need to get closer and a pro shoots a lot of photographs. Cropping could have made the last two shots great. You have not learned to work the fame to it,s maximum potential. The pictures are cute and a cut above snapshots because of exposure and you captured the personality of the subjects. You used black and white better than you know you were doing which is real pro photography.

First, I apparently have to confess to something that I didn't know probably will make a big difference in your last statement. I did not shoot these in B&W. I converted them to B&W and then tweeked them to what I liked. The water was a very cloudy green (that I didn't like) because it had rained very hard earlier that day.

I know some think I should have cropped the pictures and all I can say is, why am I going out of my way to find a nice location to take pictures of my granddaughter when I can just find a wall to put her up against at home? This is where everyone looses me with the cropping. I love cropping, most every picture I JPEG has been cropped. Although the last picture here........I did cut off her feet. I will keep a better eye out for that. Would it have been better, instead of cropping, to blur the surroundings so there is just a hint of the surroundings and the focus is on the "kid"?

I understand there are rules that apply to photography and I have to admit, I don't have any idea what they are which is why I am sure most of my pictures are snapshots and not good ones at that. But do all rules apply to all pictures?

Rules should probably be called "guide lines". I break the rules all the time but composition is a big deal to me. I don't think in "rules" - I think in "what will show off the subject in the best way?". Some simple ones like not chopping off feet will come to be second nature to you as will not wanting a disruptive background. It's like playing an instrument - improvement only comes with practice. You have some wonderful images here - relax and make it fun or you won't want to do it.

Did you diffuse the glow?

All I did was run a noise filter in addition to the cropping and color adjustment.

I have a photo of a little girl and a puppy...it's really cute but it is a hunting family and we were taking pictures with a gun and such hunting supplies. Well, when I was taking the photo I didn't see it but now that it's on my computer, there is a shotgun in the background and it looks like it is pointed at her head. How do I get that out!!? (The gun was actually about 15 feet behind her and pointed at an angle and NOT loaded) I use Photoshop Elements 8. Thanks for any help you can give me! :)

I "operated" just a little on this adorable image. I always feel a bit presumptuous when I do this but it's fun for me and I hope helpful to you. I just got rid of some extraneous space and upped the colors a bit.

sometime when I am not feeling that "great" about the results I am getting I go to this website: http://youarenotaphotog.tumblr.com/ and look at what "professional" photographers are charging people for... then I feel better about my family snapshots. ;)

The B/W conversion is a little harsh, there isn't much light,to much dark, it seems you are loosing detail in the shadows. - I personnaly struggle with B/W conversation and kind of tend to shy away from it cause I just can't get it "right".

These are cute shots of your daughter and grand daughter, and I agree I do like the crops better, but I tend to crop really tight (somtimes cropping of peoples limbs, a big no-no). They are a great start to your photography journey!

I don't know about everyone else, but I am having a hard time deciding just where my screen on my laptop should be at so that I get a correct picture. Some of my pictures might be to dark or light depending on where my screen is at......and actually, that also can apply to others. What I am hoping is that you have a desktop and your screen is showing you exactly what the pics look like.

I feel like the lean on the screen could really be messing up my pictures. Does anyone else have that issue?????

Even with a desktop, it depends on how you are sitting in front of it. But...on my desktop, the first one is dark. The next two are just about perfect in all lighting aspects and the tones are wonderful. In the third one, if you had tipped your camera on its side, you would not have cut her feet off. It's amazing how many people are now going around with no feet! I

I wouldn't worry about whether or not something is professional looking. Professional just means money changes hands. You are well on your way to filling the family album with with treasures.

I am starting to see that inside my lens it's getting dirty. It's in all of them. I have cleaned the outside of the lens, but when I look thur my camera I see grainy spots thur the lens. How do, or where can I go to get my lens clean? When I zoom out I don't see it as much, but when I come back in I see it. It is driving me up the wall!!!!!

If you have a Nikon and want it professionally cleaned, APS (Authorized Photo Service) in Morton Grove, IL is the best. Their turn-around time is incredibly short.

I do have a Nikon, however I don't live near IL and I don't have a spare camera so I can ship the one I need fixed. Thank you though!!

You would have it back in about a week. I made the mistake of taking one into a Ritz and it was weeks before I got it back.

I should have added that they are a Nikon Authrized Service and they will give your camera a good checkup and will call before making any repairs.

I am not connected to this company in any way ~smile~.

Amazing. What camera did you use?

I have a D700 and a D2X and I can't honestly tell you which I used - probably the D700 - although I usually stick both cameras in the car when I know I'm headed for Steptoe Butte.

Nice to hear from you. It's interesting to hear how different peoples ideas are. Photography is so subjective, you can have 5 different people view it and have 5 different opinions.

The shot of the 4 year old with the steps and the rose bush over the walkway made the finals when I entered it in the BetterPhoto.com monthly contest. There were 14,900 entries and I made the finals with that photo. This is only the 4th time I've made the finals. I get many Editor's Picks but it is hard to make the finals. Once you make the finals they then choose 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. I hope someday to get one of those. So I just keep entering the contests and keep my fingers crossed. As a rule I usually shoot portraits very tight but that shot I loved the backdrop and wanted to try something different. That is a neighbors backyard and she let me use it to shoot these portraits. This would make a perfect spot for a wedding photo.
Nice to hear from you. It's interesting to hear ho... (show quote)

Kathy is right about it being an honor to make the finals at BetterPhoto.com. The talent there is astonishing.

OK--out of thousands of photos on my computer, probably 70% would be classified as snapshots. Here are a couple---let me know what you think!

It doesn't take much to turn a snapshot into something a little more.
