My thought was to pair a D7200 with a 35mm, 17-70 2.8 and round out the glass with an old 70-210 I already have to cover all my bases. Later, I will add the Tokina 11-20 for good performance at the wide end. Make sense?
Don't forget to get the Nikon 200-500mm or the 80-400mm Good for sports and birds and great lenses with your D7200.
Here is an interesting review of the Nikon 35mm lens:

It's my favorite lens. I used it with my D5100 and with my D500. I probably use this lens the most and always being it with me. Night time camp fires are gun shots.
Here is a good book on the Nikon D5500: https://www.amazon.com/David-Buschs-Compact-Field-Guide/dp/1681980428/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1494277217&sr=8-3&keywords=Nikon+d5500+book
I have a D500 and love it. I have owned D40, D5100 and D7200 DSLR cameras and happy with all of them. I am thinking of getting a camera for my daughter to use on a vacation we are taking in June to S. Africa then either just giving it to her or using that camera with my work when I go out to job sites. If I stick with Nikon DSLR I have the lenses. Looking at the comparisons between the D5300, D5500 and D5600 they are all very close other than touch screen. I'm leaning on a refurb D5300 for about $476.00. But... have been thinking of getting her a Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black) mirrorless camera (Cost is about $50 less then the refurb D5300). It's small and should be very easy to travel with and I'll use it for work when we return. Right now I'm debating inside my mind which camera to go with... Like I said I have the D500, a few lenses including the 80-400mm Nikon which we will be taking to Africa...... could buy the D5300 and put the 18-200mm on that and let her go to town using that camera.... Or buy my first mirrorless and see what that technology is all about...
I have a 35mm lens that I have used with my D5100, D7200 and my D500. $200 bucks and it's my favorite lens. Fast and takes great pictures. Used they go for $150.00
so is using an EVF kind of like using live view but perhaps sharper?
I use the Nikon D500 and this was a hard decision seeing I was looking to stay under $500 for a camera for my daughter to use when we fly to S. Africa for a safari June 11-25th. I was looking at a few Sony and Panasonic but ended up staying in the Nikon family since I have a number of lenses including an 18-200 and 80-400. So I bought her an older refurb Nikon D5300 to use. Frankly she made the decision after I showed her about five mirrorless Sony's and a Mirrorless Panasonic all under $500.00.... I'm still considering the decision and can back out of need be...

The Sony SHILL speaks! Again!
Sony is doing well, but the message here is very, very, very overstated. In fact Sony is really overated. It just doesn't live up to reality. Trust me, it really is not a professional level camera manufacturer yet.Not serious, trust me! Just read the threads, how many people on UHH have told us that they're abandoning DSLRs tomorrow in favor of Sony? Some, but not that many, it's not happening, folks, that's what the UHH community is telling us. Now we all know, that the opportunity for mirrorless is Yuuoooge, and that Sony products are AMAZING, I mean how could Cholly not be right about this? It's just those crooked Nikon users and dishonest Canon users that are spreading FAKE news, yes, you heard that right FAKE news, such dishonest and nasty people using Canon or Nikon.
We're going to make Sony great again, folks, trust me, it's going to happen on day one! Sell now before it's too late, vote buy Sony! No, I don't think so, at least until I cahnge my mind!http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/news/a38403/how-to-sound-like-donald-trump/

You said "Trust me, it really is not a professional level camera manufacturer yet.". What Sony is they are the leader in broadcast video studio cameras. Ikegami and Grass Valley make good studio cameras as well as Panasonic and Hitachi. I think Sony cameras we are talking about will improve. They have the deep pockets and deep research ability.
That's what I'm thinking to do. Buy a cheap one to keep with me in my SUV to take shots of job sites.

Or this one seeing I have a number of lenses. Plus taking my daughter on an African Safari in June. Own D500

I have been thinking of buying an older version Nikon, Somy or Panasonic Mirrorless Camera. I see them for around $400 or less. Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1, Sony Alpha NEX-7 for example used from BH cost $234 and $339 from BH for example. But I can pick up the Nikon D5300 for $479.
My daughter and I are going on Safari June 11-25 in S. Africa. I own the Nikon D500. The second camera would be for her to use during the trip and one I use as a carry around to take shots of job sites for work.
The mirrorlist interest me but own a number of lenses for my D500 which means I'd be set for lenses if I buy the D5300.
What are your thoughts.
