Second set - wanted tripod but not allowed at zoo. Advice for anyone starting out...go directly to flamingos....they like to pose lol!
This is beautiful Carol! Egrets and Herons are so regal. Would you mind if I asked what lens you use for these?
So I took my D5500 with my inexpensive 55-200 kit lens just to see what I could do. Obviously no PP but would welcome any thoughts on what could make these better - having a good time! (#4 needs to be cropped but this picture just makes me happy ;)

#1 great shot, composition, background, color... all there. Other two why even show them??? Retire a hero with #1
Lol....I get it. Just was challenged by Gessman to make the most of my trouble making 55-200 lens. Will refrain from posting my junk shots in the future ;)
With a little push from Gessman (thank you by the way), I decided to take another try at my 55-200 which I haven't had much luck with. Went out searching for subjects on a very windy gloomy day and took a few auto's and manual shots and did not extend the lens to the limit - worked a lot better! Manual seemed to work better with this breeze and although composition is weak, I don't feel it was a wasted day. Thanks everyone :)
Thank you Gessman! I am going to try that today - will let you know how it goes. Appreciate the tip very much.
Thanks everyone! Hoping I will be brave enough (and not so picky) to post some of my pics. We shall see....
Thanks Spider - My camera came with a 18-55 & 55-200 (not so happy with the latter but still practicing) Been getting surprisingly good shots with my 18-55 so not regretting the purchase at all. Going to keep at it - loving the shots you have taken with the D5500 so far - very encouraging to me!
Thank you Richard. Yes, you are right...I am having a hard time with patience lol. I will take your advice :D
Thank you - didn't even think about that - personal favorite?
I have just joined after following this forum for a couple of weeks and have to say that this is my favorite! Everyone is so kind and welcoming.
I was a photography student back in the early '80s and never got past the B&W developing stage (yes, fond memories of reeling film on a spool in pitch black closets!) figuring I needed to change my major so I could make some money. I don't look back with regret usually, but do feel as if I lost a little of my soul, even though my new major has served me well. I now am ready to get back to my passion but am amazed how much I don't remember (don't get old!). This forum is feeding my passion and I thank everyone here!
I have purchased a D5500 and have been very pleased with it so far with even just the stock lens. I did purchase a N 35mm and have been using it the most to practice and am itching to buy some more lenses but wondering if I should buy used to save money for practice, or should I buy new and just use the heck out of them? There seems to be so many good lens out there but I don't want to spend a fortune. (For info, I am interested in macro, portrait & landscape) Would the Tokina 100mm be a good starter macro & portrait lens? Would love advice!
