I am really appreciative of all the replies here. I never thought this topic would generate as much interest as it has. Even those who didn't really have much to add ("ditch the Nikon, get a Canon") have had their voices heard and weighed. I think the general consensus is that I may have landed a dud; that Nikon cameras can survive the worst possible extremes and still produce award-winning photographs. As I mentioned in my previous reply, I think I will take the D7100 body to the shop where I bought it, and see if I can't use it as a partial down payment on a D7500 body.

Since the D7500 isn't yet publicly available, does anyone have some form of comparison between it and the D7200?

Ok, some of us might jump into this one. Consider getting the Nikon D500. I bought a slightly used one from a local store. A guy bought it walked out used it for an hour and returned it for a Canon. I love my D500 and use it almost every.

Here is a comparison of the D7200 and D7500

I watched a National Geographic photographer have his Nikon D5's serviced. One got eaten by a lion and another one got stepped on by an elephant. He got both of them repaired in the UK at Nikon service. Service department found his repairs interesting because it's always something that's not normal.

I went from the D40 to D5100 to D7200 then at local camera store a guy traded in his D500 for a Canon. D500 was new and used only a few times. Traded in my D7200 for the D500. Own a few lenses one cost over $2k. One time my kit 18-55mm that came with the D5100 was not working correctly. Nikon fixed it. I gave my D40 away to my sister in law. She used it with that repaird lens for years then gave camera and lens away to her daughter in law. Pack ed all my cameras in my Harley for raid trumps. Now thinking I should buy insurance just in case. Any suggestion where to purchase camera insurance?

Which lens adapter are you using? If I did not have the D500 I'd also purchase the A6500 but seeing I don't do video and the D500 does 4K if I want to decided to go with the less expansive Alpha. I bought a cheap lens adapter so I have to use manual aperture and focus. But one day I might purchase one of the intelligent lens adapters...

I certainly wouldn't disagree with what you say but that doesn't necessarily speak to the issue of what happen in the future and I say that as a person who has both Sony and Canon gear, not particularly prejudiced in one direction or the other. Sony is heavily invested in home electronics which are a logical extension to their camera lines as in 4k tv and blue ray players while Canon is buoyed up by commercial products. It wouldn't be totally ridiculous to point at the betamax as the kind of problems Sony might find itself in with its current strategy if someone pops 8k out there as a viable area of interest. One way or another I don't think it's very useful for me to keep talking about it.

That a good point. Sony technology for pictures goes from the highend cinema cameras and even supper expensive 8K projectors and extends down through all their video imaging. TV, camera and of course mirrorless pictures. Huge company with lots of R&D.

For me I like a lot of cameras including Panasonic but seem to always purchase Nikon and of course the A6000 I got for my wife because she did not want a Nikon D5300 which she called to big and a mini D500 (LOL). We are happy with the A6000. If I was going to spend a few thousand on a new camera system, I might go with the A6500 and one of the long throw lenses. But have all that with my D500 (80-400mm) which I use for wildlife (birds for example) and GT racing (Rolex 24 for example). Cameras in many ways are like speakers for large churches. All the brands (JBL, d&b, Meyer, Adamson, EV) all make a top of the line speaker. Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon Olympus all have good cameras. If you were addicted and rich you could buy them all.

I'm a Sony broadcast camera dealer as well as Panasonic, Ikegmi and Hitachi. Sony is number one for a lot of reasons but the others are very good. Sony offers video cameras in all price ranges. For example, they offer an HD camcorder with SDI output for as low as $2000.00 but they have camcorders with that output at $2500, $3000, $3500, $4200 and so forth. There attitude is there is a price that a person can reach for. The FS 5 and 7 4K are very nice but they have a 4K under $3500.

I'm guessing they will do something simpler with their Alpha cameras. I have the A6000 and love it. I also have the Nikon D500 and love it but... If I did not have the Nikon I "might" buy the A6500. But owned Nikons for years have lots of lenses (some costly) and really like the D500.

There are other great cameras out there just like there are great studio and camcorders by Panasonic and the other companies. We use to tell people looking at Sony broadcast, "you will not get fired for suggesting Sony". LOL

It always amazes me that some people think of only Sony when the discuss mirrorless cameras and the iPhone when discussing smartphones. There are other mirrorless cameras other than Sony like Fuji, Panasonic and Olympus whose lens are better and less expensive. For smartphones Samsung outsells the Apple iPhone worldwide and Consumer Reports has the Samsung 7S and 8S as being the best camera phones with both iPhones at the forth and fifth positions. Just a thought since some people discuss Sony and the iPhones similar to Coke and KFC.
