I would like to know how you acclimated your camera to the cold from the warm place that you keep it.

I carried my camera and lenses in a water proof day pack. We traveled from ship to shore on inflatable rubber Zodiac boats. If the seas were calm I'd take the camera out and shoot as the opportunity arose. When we returned to the ship I left the camera in the bag for about an hour before taking it out to upload the SD card to my laptop. Temperatures were not that bad, in the mid to upper thirties. It was late summer down there in March.

I'm reluctant to post my images they just don't seem as nice as what everyone else posts. However I need to get my feet wet so here goes.

It's a compromise and appears undersized for your stated use.

Thanks, I'll look at that thread. I'm brand new to photography and have already made to many purchasing mistakes before finding UHH.

I am leaving for Antarctica in 10 days and I need a tripod.
I am looking at the Sirui T-024X Traveler Light Carbon Fiber Tripod with a C-10S Ball Head. I am basing my choice on size and weight. However I am concerned about whether or not it will be stable enough. I will be shooting with a Nikon D5300 body and a Nikon 18-55mm kit lens and a Nikon 55-300mm zoom lens. The weight of the camera body and 55-300mm lens is 2lb 10.125oz.
Any comments on the suitability of this set-up or suggestions for a more suitable tripod. I only have a budget of $300.00.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Tom, are you a moderator or one of the staff for UHH or just a member like most of us? Not trying to start anything, just curious. I haven't seen many requests like this toward someone. I'm trying to learn who is connected to UHH other than regular members. Cheers.

My guess is that he was referring to the avatar.

Reenactors at the battle of Bentonville, NC one of the last major battles of the civil war March 19 to 21, 1865. Taken with a Nikon Coolpix 3100 so I had no control over DOF. I would have preferred a little shallower in the first image.

Thank you one and all for your warm welcomes and replies to my questions.
In future post I will make sure to enable store original.
When I go ashore in Antarctica I plan to carry 4 fully charged batteries plus the one in each camera body.
I have learned my lesson and in the future will only buy form known reputable dealers. Probably brick and mortar stores in Raleigh.
The two camera bodies, the 50, 18-55, and 55-200 were purchased from photovideo4less.com. They did not try to high pressure me into purchasing more expensive gear. Maybe I got lucky. I will check the serial numbers with Nikon and see what they can tell me. If these turn out to be grey market items I will use them until they fail then replace them with U.S. models.

Hi All,
I consider myself very new to photography and wish I ha€™d found this forum before I started buying gear. I have about a million questions but will limit them to just a few.
I wi€™ll give you a brief profile before I start asking questions. I’ve always be interested in photography but never had nerve to follow up on it. I have owned one SLR an Olympus half frame that I bought in Vietnam in 1969 and that was stolen in Italy in 1985. I have no idea what model it was and I never became proficient in its use. All other cameras have been a series of point and shoot cameras.
My brother and I used to go to Good Will and buy Kodak box cameras for 10 or 15 cents. With a roll of 126 black and white film purchased at the local drug store we’d set off to shoot the world. That usually consisted of a few shots of our cat, dog, parakeet and a few friends. When I turned 10 in 1957 I begged my parents for a camera for my birthday. I came home from school that day and found a large box with a disk attached wrapped and waiting in the living room. I was ecstatic, I thought they had bought me a press camera. I was never happy with the basketball and hoop, and they were never happy that I didn’t play with it. Sixty years later I have a Nikon D5300 that I’m slowly becoming proficient with. For me it has been a pretty steep learning curve. I’m beginning to shoot in Manual as well and Aperture and Shutter Priority I’m trying to avoid Automatic.
My first question is how do I know if the equipment I’ve been buying on e-bay is gray market or not?
Next, on March 2nd, my wife and I leave for Antarctica. I’m taking 2 Nikon D5300 bodies with 4 lenses.
A 50 mm prime, an 18 to 55 mm zoom, a 55 to 200 mm zoom and a 55 to 300 mm zoom. The 18 to 55 and the 55 to 300 will probably stay on the bodies most of the time. I have UV filters on all lenses. If I use a CPL filter should I take the UV filter off first or just piggy-back them. I’m also taking an older Nikon Coolpix 3100 along for use on Zodiac transfers going ashore. What else should I be thinking about taking with me?
Attached is an image of Yates Mill in Raleigh, NC captured a few years ago with the Coolpix 3100. I appreciate any criticism and suggestions for improvements.
Thanks,
Bob
