Hello, I just watched a very nice video by Steve Perry on the Nikon Z and the Sony. Both are great systems. Take a look at his site.

Superb results. I have that lens and have used it on my D700, D800e, and D850. Great results.

Some folks have made negative comments about that lens but I've not seen anything but good results from mine.

I agree, I find the lens is great on my D850.

Thank you very much for the complements on my website and work. I am most appreciative! I looked into the Sony Alpha today and it is indeed impressive. A bit out of my price range though considering that I will also need to purchase lenses for it. :-( After reading your post today regarding the Nikon Z system, I will be looking at what Steve Perry has to say about it. Hopefully, he has made a comparison between the Sony and Nikon that I can watch/read. I follow him regularly. I also follow Mark Smith, who is here in Florida and he made some pretty convincing statements on the Sony (he had previously been a Nikon shooter). I have some time before I buy as I would like to sell at least some of my equipment first so I will be "investigating" further. I am very grateful for the input I have received here from people like yourself as it will help me to make the best choice. Thank you very much.

Again, your website looks great and the images look fantastic, Keep shooting, Dale

The Total Aggregate Production run on your lens is ~ 97560 units
Thus your lens is approximately in the last 10423 units made (297560-287137)...
Or the final 11% if the production run...

While this is definitely in it's favor, there are so many other parameters in the mix here.
BTW; The fact you're the original owner ranks high on my personal assessment of worth/value...
I've had excellent results (luck?) purchasing previously own kit from original owners.
And is (in my humble estimation) a very good thing.

On the down side, I'm no longer keen on purchasing Silent Wave optics...
They sadly have a higher failure rate compared to AF-D optics (which were produced during Nikon's Golden Era). For validation of the aforementioned check out Roberts' (UsePhotoPro) and KEH who consistently advertised failed AF-S optics (As Is) parts only.

I lusted after the AF-S 70-200mm f/4G IF ED VR for years until several colleagues assured me that it's not if but when it's Silent Wave motor fails... Same is true with the optically excellent AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8D Nikkor

But please don't take my word here... Trust Robert's instead, they are a very reliable vendor.

That said I have a colleague who shoots outdoor league sports with the exact same version of the 80-400mm as yours and his work is absolutely stunning... He loves this lens, which he has used successfully for many years.

Hope this helps Sharon and Dale...
All the best on your photographic journeys

Thank you for your technical insight. My silent wave motor had to be repaired due to my fall at a motor cycle event. As I was tracking some bikes going over jumps, I stepped in a whole and BAM, I dropped my D850. The camera was fine but the lens took a hit. The motor failure was my doing and the repair was around $500.00. I had it repaired and traded the lens at a KEH event several years later. I had traders remorse as I liked the lens that is why I am looking at the 80-400 being offered at this site.

Recently, I have been stung by a Z bug and now have two systems, the D and the Z. I have not yet had a silent wave motor failure but that is not to say they do not occur. I don't know the technical specs of the Z lens system all I know is that out in the field the focus is fast and the subject looks sharp on the computer.

I agree with you on Roberts. I have purchased many products from them and have no negatives to report. I also find Hunt's in Manchester, New Hampshire as a very reputable company. I have bought a few used Z lens from them with no problems. They are also my NPS dealer.

As an aside, it appears all manufactures have limited their warranties, why?

I went to a local camera store and looked at the Sony A9ii. It seems to be a very nice body with many controls and focus points. However, as I tried to compare the Sony to the Z9 I did not experience a "WOW" moment with the Sony. If I was making my first purchase of a digital camera in the price range of the Sony, I would probably be very impressed with its form and function. The controls on the back of the body seem very clean in design and function.

Then the store sales person mentioned the Alpha 1. I looked at the specs on the computer, as I did not handle the camera body directly, and I like the 50mg pixels of the camera. I see that the A9ii is a 20mg pixel camera. I like the increased pixels in creating the ability to crop and still maintain a rich final digital product. Finally, the Sony has many features that I am sure you will like. Is the camera better than a Z9...Hmmm. If you have small hands the Sony is very nice whereas the Z9 is a bit bigger. In comparison of lenses, Sony and Nikon offer a growing list of prime and zoom glass. I have tried many Nikon Z lenses in the S-line and do not feel the need to change systems. I am sure the Sony glass will meet your needs.

Your website looks very good. Your skill level enhances your image. Keep up the great work.

My last question, have you tried the Nikon Z-system? Go to Johnson Photo in Bradenton as they seem to carry lots of mirrorless equipment. Go to Steve Perry's site and you will be able to explore the Nikon system and others at a very in-depth level. Take a look at his eBooks. I believe he shoots both Nikon and Sony systems.

Keep shooting

Interested in your lens but still looking. How is the focus motor working? I had one and the focus motor died. I had it fixed but it took months to repair as Nikon did not stock the parts. How old is the lens? Is this a USA model?
Thank you for your time, Dale

Thanks Dalek, yes, the artists do sell their works from here or from their home studios. For a bit more information, you can read through the Museum's link https://superstitionmountainlostdutchmanmuseum.org/

I have visited the museum site and found it to be colorful but lacking in interactivity: I could not find an online catalog for the purchase of goods. Thank you for your attention to my query. Dale
