I have enjoyed the discussion. FYI: I know it's not a P&S but being a philosophical question means there is no right or wrong answers. It reminds me a joke I heard a number of years ago (believe it was Bill Cosby):

Philosphy Major: "Why is there air?"

PE Major: "There is air to blow up basket balls, volly balls & footballs"

It was a good camera. It belonged to my Dad. He never used it much so I took it over (as long as I bought the film and paid to get it developed :D ) I guess my Kodak Easy Share C633 would be a P&S, as it fits in my pocket (shirt).

Thanks for the input, we'll see what happens.

Every now and then I see the term "Point and Shoot". This is defined as "A camera that is simple, easy to use with a minimum of user controls". Such was my first camera (pictured) the only control was to either move backward or forward to get it in focus.

Fast forward 40+ years (with any number of cameras that were P&S). Now the question is: with my Nikon 3100 (or any other such camera) if all I do is turn it on, let it do the work and take the picture, without doing anything else, does that make it a P&S? The only thing I'm controlling is the composition of the picture.

One other question: What makes a "bridge camera" or perhaps what is one?

1st camera

I had an old WW2 vet (former POW)ask me once why everybody was doing all the stuff they were doing for us when we got back from the 1st Gulf War that they didn't do when we got back from Viet Nam (I was in both). I told him I thought that guilt was high on the list of reasons.

It seems to be the problem with any specalty mag, after a bit they keep repeating. I didn't renew my bicycle magasine this time (it was 5 years for the cost of 2). The January issue was about the only good one, with new bikes and gear review. These magazines also seem to be geared to people who have no other things to do in their life. I had thought about trying OP, but not sure now.

[quote=BrettOssman]This week I started a project My Nightly Walk, where I would pick one and only one subject in my neighborhood walk, and keep one photo. No post-processing. Get my exercise and a challenge.

Anyway, the first two nights were fun. Folks liked my photos, and the concept. Third night I was confronted twice by residents concerned that I was photographing their property. I was in the general vicinity, but never pointed my camera at their property. I explained what I was doing to both. One drove off with a suspicious look, the other seemed semi-OK with it.

This came at a good time. I'm getting ready to take some "Then and Now" pictures for our local library. Street scenes from long ago and what they look like now.

Shouldn't be a problem as they are all street views, with only a couple of houses in the series and I know those people so no problem there.

Glad I live in a small town. I'm known as the "nut" that carries a camera around. I used to be (in high school) that nut who runs everywhere (for track and Cross Country), took a bit before people stopped asking if I wanted a ride.

I call it "drive by shootings" - I do a lot of those. Have considered having my wife drop me off, go up the road and turn around to come back and get me. (considered) If I know the photo op is there I try to make sure if possible there is no one on the road following then stop. Otherwise, I just miss the opportunity. Many times I turn around to try to get the shot. It takes us a long time to get anywhere because of that.

If there's a chance of a shot I let the wife drive and do the picture taking. As long as she's going the speed limit, I don't care what the people behind think. Have been known to turn around then hop in the back of the pickup for a short distance.

Glad I live in the Midwest. Have never seen anything close to any of these. As close as we get to these is the idiots in pajama bottoms, or the guys in 20 degree weather earing a heavy coat and shorts. I do wish someone could explain that one to me. If it's cold enough to be wearing a heavy coat isn't it cold enough to wear pants!

Hello Phil, I have no hang ups about photography, I will use any method to give me the result I want in any given circumstance. There are those that say you are not a "real" photographer unless you shoot in full manual. What nonsense¹, it's the image that counts, not which knobs you twiddled to get it. When you look at a "good" image hanging on a wall how would you tell what mode or settings had been used? Why would it matter?

¹) I was going to say "arrogant nonsense" but decided to tone it down for fear of upsetting the "real photographers" ;-)
