Beautifully clear shot. I notice that the wing structure is made partly from pentagons and partly from 4 sided figures and wonder the significance of this difference, if any.
Hi Brenda: Thanks for your nice comment on the picture. The network arrangements of some insect wing veins is probably related to the structural requirements of the wing along with the genetic (Evolutionary) material available. In the study of insect wings the longitudinal veins along with a few cross veins are of more significance. To get an idea of how extensive this subject is check out the Wikipedia article “insect wing”

This Damselfly is larger than the sensor in my camera. But, there is so much detail I thought it might do well here.

Outstanding shot, a lot of amazing detail in the download. Did you use a ring light?

JoeB

I used a 5X7 soft box on a Nikon SB900. Camera set to TTL and used Flash Compensation to adjust flash level.

I did have a ring light but it went out and fried the camera flash circuitry.
A ring light does not cause as many hot spots but is a lot more expensive.

The first two pictures are two views of an Emerald Jumper Paraphidippus aurantius. Female. This spider has two color forms, this is the gold form.
Second is a moth. I would not have seen this had I not seen it land. It appeared as a greenish gray blotch on a gray tree. It is about 7/16 inch long. The exposure has been increased to bring out the colors.
Third is the Golden Backed Snipe Fly. Family Rhagionidae. Chrysopilus thoracicus. Male.

Forest Tent Caterpillar, Malacosoma disstria top view, side view and head.
View of head included but I am not totally satisfied with it.
Probably diffraction problems at this magnification.
The eyes are visible in the lower right quarter of the head image.

Crane fly. Tipulidae. Tried a stack but wind motion caused ghost and broken wing veins.
This is a single shot but suffers from blur of wing ends and palps out of focus.
