That's one of the advantages of using a hard disc drive... but, a caution. I have a couple of 5-1/4" drives here for some 5-1/4" floppy diskettes, but, don't have an interface to connect to a new computer. Also have an old 80meg MFM hard drive that my programmer buddy gave me... he paid over $5000 for it originally.

CDs and Blue-rays are not good long term storage solutions because they will deteriorate over time. External hard drives are cheap. You need to backup your photos in at least three places, one of which should be off site.
Stay away from Western Digital HDs... I've had 4 go south in the last two years.

USB, Good for temporary storage.

That why Raid 50 is good... has redundancy. My son mentioned that Raid 5 is not used anymore with new installs... He mentioned that Raid 6 was a better application.

USBs are 3.1 and my one ASUS laptop has a Thunderbolt drive...

For Info, I just sync'd my excel files and dwg files from 2 desktops, 2 laptops, 2 regular USBs and 1 encrypted one (for drawings, about 27,000 files) using a totally free program called 'FreeFileSync'. This has not been done in 20 or 30 years. The program works extremely well and has more features than most people want. I'll use this to consolidate all my CD/DVDs.

I have a small Nikon Colorpix S9900 that I carry with me in my laptop carrier. I don't know if they still make them, but it takes fairly good photos. I use it for project sites, so, my demands are not too high... does a reasonable attempt at macro shots.

You might look into Raid 5 or Raid 50... has redundancy and for large photo files, speed.
