I've got a 580EX II that works incredibly well with my Canon 7D and have had it for several years... I'm not professional, but, I couldn't ask for a nicer flash... also use rechargeables with it...

I generally use a Canon SX20IS for taking photos on building sites and the strobe functions perfectly well on that relic. Should have added that the strobe is nearly as large as the latter camera... looks 'funny'.

300% crops of brick walls from 6 feet!!! Is that really why you bought a camera? I have better things to do - like going out and making photographs.

He's showing the detail of the masonry and mortar joint... a brick wall doesn't move so fast, so, he's eliminating one of the variables. Great detail shots... I often try macros with a success ratio of about 1 in 3 or 4, and his photos are every bit as clear.

Great place for photos... also, the roadway to Jasper. The whole area is a delight. You can use a wide angle, midrange, and telephoto lens, as well as take macros of some of the flora. Have a good trip, and, you cannot take too many pictures.

Never looked at the cost being an expense... just provided digital images as a friendly gesture. I did not consider taking pictures as a 'business'.

The latte you can do without... not hockey.

That may vary with jurisdiction... you might check locally

Likely some other parent... if I were involved with a amateur hockey league with a child, I'd be taking a 'bunch' of photos... I still have photos of my granddaughter on the climbing wall in Lindsay along with her friends, and provided a link to the photos for others. If there is a need for photos, someone will take up the gauntlet.

I assume it's amateur hockey. Does the league charge you a fee for photographing the games? You are using the facility as a business venture, and, as such you should be paying a fee to record the events. As a active parent involved in your hockey league, you should be posting the photos on line for other parents.

I have a Nikon S9900 that I've had for over a year and it works very well. I keep it with my laptop so anytime I'm at work I have the camera. I don't recall how much it cost, but, it was quite reasonable and I don't know if they manufacture it anymore. It's a good solid little camera.

Have you looked at Paint.Net... this is a freeware Photoshop workalike... It's a little more limited, but, can likely do the job.

That is the whole issue: only the final version is saved as JPEG; only one write - many reads, but not written back to media.

Often when I'm working on a file, I do multiple saves so I don't lose data. I suspect graphics users (I'm not one) do multiple backups...

I am treating JPEGs as slides - except that repeated viewing doesn't do any harm!

Strictly as a viewer... then the data is disturbed only once when accessed... unless it is discarded.

The Win photo viewer does not write; the iPhone photo viewer does not write; ad nauseam

If the file is opened and saved (unless discarded) the file is changed. JPEG causes changes because it defaults to a data compression engine at heart.

Disagree... if you do a checksum on the data, the checksum will change unless the file is discarded without saving... If a file is closed, it is often written back to the HDD or whatever and changed.
