As long as the person presenting the image captured is not representing it as "straight out of the camera," why do you care.

This is like the person who looks down at those who drink their tea without their pinkie finger extended! If anyone who takes photographs enjoys the activity and is pleased with the resulting image, then just be happy for them.

Count me in. I will message you my full contact info. Maybe the zoo outing could be our first excursion for that group.

clixpix - I will be sure and let everyone know the proposed dates, so we can settle on something that everyone can attend. Here are a few pics that I took my last time there. I love the zoo.

Does it get much more magestic than a Tiger?

Shooters - once we get an idea of the interest I will throw out some dates and see who can make it. I was thinking we could go in as soon as they open, and then meet either in the zoo at the picnic tables, our tailgate in the parking lot for a lunch and we could share our photos. Kinda get to know each other. How does that sound? Not so formal as a club, just a bunch who share a common interest in photography. If this works we could pick other venues and meet several times a year at different locations. How does that sound to you? No dues! Grin.

I was thinking morning might be best in Spring, before it gets too hot and animals will be out and about. I started a topic to see if there is an interest.

If any if you have photos taken at the Phoenix Zoo please post them here. Also, if you would be interested in setting up a photo excursion to the Zoo this Spring, let's see if we can settle on a date. We could tailgate out in the parking lot and share lunch, photos, and lies!

MW, those are great black and whites. I live in the Phoenix Metro area (Chandler) and it is good to see there are some serious IR photographers here in The Valley. I have been thinking of a photo excursion to the Phoenix Zoo. Have you shot IR there? Also have you tried editing your IR photos in Smart Photo Editor? I am a recent convert and I have really been impressed with what it can do with IR photos. Hope to see more of your work here. What kind of camera are you using?

You clearly have not done any post editing using images from both cameras (the 5DMk II and the iPhone)! Take a photograph of the exact same scene, utilizing the same lighting. Now load them both into Photoshop or Smart Photo Editor, or what ever application you use. Now Click on VIEW, and go to 100%. You don't see a difference?

If you do not see a difference, then sell your 5DMk II (I will give you a grand for the body!) and stick with your iPhone. You will be a happier man.

If you currently have a Canon T3, and when it comes to lenses, you "have them all," then it is likely you have a few EF-S lenses as well as EF Lenses. (look at the front of the lens, written around the front glass). If you obtain a Full Frame Canon camera (5D, 5D Mk II, 5D Mk III, or any of the 1D or 1Ds cameras) your EF-S lenses will not mount on the Full a Frame cameras, only the EF lenses. However, your EF lenses will mount on both the Crop Frame and Full Frame bodies. That ought to confuse you!

Hey, I am 70 years old and oldest car I ever owned was a 1952 MG-TD. It was ten years old when I bought it. Since many of the cars shown at the beginning if this thread are '20s and '30s cars, I doubt there are any drivers around that bought and drove them new off the showroom floor. If they bought a 1920s car, and they were 20 years old, that would make them 114 today. If they are around I doubt they would remember it. Shoot, I barely remember to set my Color Balanceg and ISO!

Okay . . . I am not selling anything. I already made my recommendation earlier in this thread, but there are a few more thought that come to mind.

(1) I am 70, and have been in and out of photography for over 50 years, which still does not make my opinions any more valuable then the next guy.

(2) Given the poor guy wants to stay under a grand, there must be 50 cameras/lens combinations that will give him the photographs he wants and can be proud of. Don't forget in that grand you also want to download Smart Photo Editor for $29.99!

(3) A first DSLR will be exactly like his first computer. It will be more of a learning tool than a production tool.

(4) Keeping that in mind, just look at what is out there in the refurb market, do your research on a half dozen of the ones with the best reviews, and just pull the trigger. Since you first asked this question 4 more major companies have probably already announced upgrades to their current line!

(5) Do not buy a bunch of lenses for your first camera! Get a good "walk-around" zoom, and go learn photography. Maybe take an intro class at your local community college. With experience, you will be answering your own question in 6 months.

My guess is this poor soul has either already bought a camera and is seeking affirmation of his choice, or by now he is so confused he has decided to take up bowling instead. Either way, good luck to you, sir!

I just got turned on to Smart Photo Editor by one of the members of the forum, and it is outstanding, easy, and cheap ($29.99 downloaded). And it is constantly getting better as various members of the SPE community keeping adding new presets. Go up on the internet and google it, and you can even downlad a free (limited funtion) 30 day trial. Then upload a couple of your images for all to enjoy.

I'd have sworn garwig indicated he wanted to stay under $1000. While I have a full frame Canon, I would not suggest that camera or any of the "L" series lenses for a first-timer. I would suggest that if you expect to MAYBE moving up to a full frame in the future and are looking at Canon DSLR cameras then do not invest in EF-S lenses, which will not fit any of the full frame Canons. You just have to sell them to replace them with EF lenses. Good, clean EF lenses generally sell locally for about 40% to 50% off new lens prices.

Staying under $1000, and maximizing my investment, I would suggest either a Canon T3i or T4i, either good, clean used with a low shutter count, or a factory refurb. Pair this excellent entry-level camera with a good used or refurb Canon EF 28-135mm IS lens, and a nice EF 50mm 1.8 (metal mount if you can find one). This will still leave a couple bucks to get a kit bag, and a couple if SD cards.

Good luck, and be sure to come back and tell us what you decided to buy.

On www.1sale.com today (Jan 31st) they have following Sony on sale:

Sony a58 20.1MP DSLR Kit w/ 18-55mm Zoom Lens, 2.7" LCD Screen, HD Video & 5 FPS Continuous Shooting for $379.99!

This is not a used or refurbished camera, but is brand new. MSRP is $599, which makes this a smokin deal for a 20MP camera. This would be an excellent choice for a first time DSLR.

And, I am also a fan of the newer Canon Rebels, T2i, T3i, T4i, all if which can still be found new or refurbed well within your price range.

Thanks, Larry, for your comments. You may rest assured that I will be around, especially when I get my converted T2i back. I am hooked on the artistry of iR, and am really getting the hang of SPE. What a magnificent application, totally supported by the SPE community. Amazing.
