check on ebay you can pick up a 500MM for about 65.00 to 70.00 I got a 400mm for 37.00 most of these lens are made by the same co ,I just sold a 500mm mirror for 45.00 on here last week.

I've been there in the winter that's way i live in florida have you ever meter off a gray card in the snow and shot manual.
I use a sekonic L-508 and meter off the sun.Your snow will be white.try it.
