People never cease to amaze me! After setting the pile of storm debris on fire, and burning it down, a homeowner on our island decided it was OK to leave and go to their home several hours away. After all, it was just smoldering. There were three Fire Departments that responded. Luckily the fire only took two sheds and left their vacation trailer alone. One shed and its contents were completely destroyed, the other badly damaged, but we were able to save some of the things inside. There was one bright spot - a neighborhood Labrador found a whole bunch of new playmates that threw her pinecones to chase.

Great set of action pictures, shame the people were stupid and glad no one was hurt.

I like this version very much.....how did you fix it?

Thank you twiga Glad you like it. on a layer copy of the picture I took a selection of the ear in shadow and flipped it and moved it over, by using the free transform I placed it over the ear in sun light and cleaned it round the edges. I then took a selection of the cheek in shadow with a feather of about 6, flipped and moved it over. You might have to alter the opacity a bit and brightness and contrast. I merged the selection down and used the patch tool on destination and blended it, and then used the healing brush to finish off. It did take a few try's till I got it to look how I wanted it to.

This is the best one. The one you posted with the white fence, just makes your eyes go to the fence. You really, really need to get the flash off the camera. Honestly, that is the first difference between "pictures" and "portraits" You need to shape the light to show dimension in the face.

Thank you bkyser, Glad you like it. Sometimes it is a bit crowded for you to use tripod and off camera flash. May be if I had put the ISO up a bit it might have helped.

Way to go! Far more of the full, fine, confident character of the lad shines through here.
I'd still like to,see more contrast within his face, but given its lighting, or shading thereof, I may be asking too much.

Here's where I wish the portrait gurus would jump in!

Dave

Thank you Uuglypher It took a while but I got ther in the end with help and advice from UHH. I now have a good grounding for the next session with Lewis.

Ok this is by far the best version. The background goes with the boy and you have done a good job of replacing it. I like the B&W much better than the sepia.I think it goes with the era that this image evokes. It is amazing to me how you have managed to fix that streak of sunlight on his cheek. Maybe tone down the highlights in his eyes some and print.

Thank you Country's Mama I am glad you like it, it did take a bit of working out to get rid of the sunlight. On a copy layer I took a copy of the other cheek with a feather of about 6, flipped it and moved it to the sunlight cheek, merged it down By using the patch tool on destination I just played around with it till it looked ok. merged the layer down and used the healing brush to blend it in a bit more. I did do it a few times till I was happy. I had also replaced his ear with a copy of the one with out the sunlight. :D

A winner my friend..you have done some great work on this shot and transfered it from ho-hum to wow...his parents are going to be thrilled..the train background made a big improvement from the fence!!

Thank you rlaugh my friend, I have enjoyed improving the shot each time with the advice given to me and also the critique has helped. His parent are thrilled with it, Lewis is their only child and they are very proud of him. I am going to give them the picture when it has been in the competition in Sept. :D

I've been following this shot through all of the different versions and I like this one the best, so far. I would add some contrast to the boy's face as it still seems a bit flat. Other than that, very nice with the new background nanaval.

Thank you SonyA580, I have learnt a lot since posting the first picture and think that it is the best. I have taken note of your comment about it being a bit flat on the face. The next time I take pictures of Lewis I am going to really think out my shot. We have a Pasty day here in August so will get some then. I am glad you like the picture.

Very nice version, like the train, a much more natural and nuanced background that tells more of the story and makes Lewis the star of it. The engine-oil smudges really show up on this version, hope your judges are smart enough about trains and boys to figure out what it is. I look forward to seeing more of Lewis in the future.

Thank you miniev sorry for the delay in replying, I hope to get more pictures of Lewis soon. I am glad you like this version as I too think that with all the help I have had it is the best.
