A point and shoot with a big sensor? That's like a fat girl with a bad appetite. Too confusing for me!

That is funny.

I haven't bought a camera in years, at least not since I bought my Nikon D3000, so yes, it has been quite a while. I have found that this camera fits my needs quite well, but this post isn't about me.

My daughter wants, as she put it, a "decent camera to take pictures with." Since I don't really have the money to get her a Nikon D3400, I'd like to know if there are any cameras out there, for a price of around $100, that would be worth considering. It's going to be a Christmas present for her, and I'm thinking about something in the Nikon Coolpix line. Suggestions?

For about $139.00 there are Sony and Canon point and shoots. I looked at the big blue store but you may find better deals on Amazon.
Both brands with the point and shoots are very good cameras. More features you add the more you pay.

I was out shooting birds a couple of weeks ago and saw an older woman, probably about my age heh, using some sort of harness and brace arrangement. I think the harness was around her shoulders and there appeared to be an arm attached to her waist. She would swing the camera up on a gimbaled head and take her pictures. It looked something like the attached picture in the link. It may be an option to just giving up on your fine camera. https://www.adorama.com/facsss.html?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=%5bSHOPPING%5d%20%5bADL%5d%20%5bPLA%5d%20-%20Generic&utm_term=4586887635569009&utm_content=%5bPLA%5d%20-%20Generic

Sadly, the time has come where I have to replace my dear D500, and I look to my friends and colleagues at UHH for guidance, and solace. Her weight, when coupled with my 70-200 f 2.8 has just gotten too heavy and too bulky for me to carry lately, especially to the high school ice hockey games that I shoot. I have no choice but to switch to lighter gear, if I am to continue my sports photography activities.

I suppose that would take me into the realm of mirrorless/MFT cameras. While I have done the research in terms of the specs of the various brands, I would appreciate input from those who have actually used MFT cameras (Sony, Olympus, Fujifilm, Lumix, etc.) in those situations where the D500 excels. In a word, I want smaller and lighter but of at least equal quality. The D500 has served me very well for indoor sports photography, in these areas: superb low light performance, a burst rate of at least 10fps, camera body ergonomics with ease of handling for fast moving action shots; great Auto Focus; and a rational and user-friendly menu system (or one that has a good a guide as Steve Perry's). Because I don't use a tripod or monopod for the type of sports photography I do, I recognize that much of the weight I'm complaining about is attributable to the long lens I use. So, I'd also be grateful for any suggestions as to comparable lenses for MFT bodies which are substantially lighter in weight. Fortunately, budgetary limitations need not be considered.

Many thanks,

BJW

As someone else suggested try changing your strap. I switched to the Peak Design leash and that takes the weight off the back of your neck. You can carry the camera cross body and adjust it so it doesn't bounce around. Slide around, up and shoot. As others said maybe change your lens. You may try rigging up a brace that supports the camera from the bottom against your torso to counter the weight of the lens if you prefer to keep the camera in front of you. Bolt in the tripod mounting hole a 2 pieces of wood to create a T and pad the part that goes against you. Make it long enough to just glide up and down your torso.

When I went for the upgrade in my camera I was back and forth between the D7500 and D500, I ended up going with the D7500 since I knew I would be walking with it all the time on vacation. The perceived weight difference made that choice. D7200 is 4.9 oz's lighter than the D500.

Mr. Spock I was in the same place you are in now during the summer with buying a tripod. i have a D3300 with a 18-200 lens which I going to take photos of the eclipse with. The tripod I had was 20 yrs old cheap sun something, the rack and pinion was worn out. I did some test shots of the sun with the camera on the tripod, the photos came out good. The issue was the tripod was just to low and soon as you loosened the lock for the height it would go down. So off to the store we go, I buy an inexpensive tripod from Best Buy and bring it home, set it up for the eclipse and take my photos and they came out blurred. Issue bought a cheap tripod with a long column, we got vibration. Take that tripod back and look for something better.

We searched on line, read articles and asked questions in the forums and got a lot of different opinions and suggestions for a tripod. I went to 3 camera store around me at this point, narrowed down the tripod in one place and thought maybe go for a carbon fiber tripod. Owner tells me order it online from him to beat the tax and I'll have the next day. I went home did a bit more research and decided that carbon fiber wasn't worth 100-200 more for a weight savings of 6-8 oz's. That also changed my criteria for a tripod. I decided i wanted something I could get height from and also compact enough to fit in luggage when we travel or in my backpack. This lead me to a 3 legged thing Travis. This works for me, some may not agree with my decision. It's light enough for travel, heavy enough to be sturdy and dampen vibrations. You can weight it down by hanging your bag on it. The ball head is nice, 4 leg sections, folds to be about the size of a standard keyboard. It has a decent weight rating and legs don't slip. It also includes a swiss arca plate. I am 5'11" and can look through my view finder with out crouching and can bring the center post up if needed. I also updated my camera to a D7500 and it is heavier than the D3300. Also the tripod can remove 1 leg and the center column and make a monopod.

I guess the point i am trying to make is decide how you are going to use this tripod. Heavy use, light use. Do you want better portability. Are you going to use it for landscape, travel? Birds? You see where I am going with this. You don't need to pay a ton of money. I paid 179 for this tripod and I am extremely happy with it. Order something from Amazon and if you don't like it return it.

These look very nice, they look like they are painted on canvas or a nice linen paper. I flipped through a bunch of your other posts and they are also very nice.

Remember that with Mac you need to order up front what you want. No adding RAM later. Sorry if this has already been mentioned. If you're an average hobbyist, 16 gigs of Ram should be sufficient.

iMac no, Mac Mini yes depending on build.

Just last week I was told by a reputable Mac repairman to stay away from third party RAM. My third party RAM, bought at Best Buy, had failed and he was replacing it.

My past 3 macs I have replaced with memory from other world computing/macsales.com and have had no issues. All memory is guaranteed and is much less expensive than going through Apple. This company was referred to me from my Mac tech we used when I was working in prepress.

I am replacing my old laptop with an iMac with a 27” monitor. The new computer comes with 8 gig of RAM memory. That use to be a lot, but not sure with the current bloatware. How much memory do you recommend for efficient post processing using Photoshop? I have no plans to edit video. “As much memory as you can afford” is not an acceptable answer.
Thanks in advance!

Long time mac user. My iMac 27 has 24 megs of ram and it runs fast. I haven't looked at the new iMac setup to see how to change the ram, but if it has the door at the bottom and you can put the chips yourself. Save some cash by buying the Ram from a third party vendor.

it seems from the recommendations that Lightroom subscription is the path to go. does the subscription have tutorials with it or is that a separate supplier?
i see i can download a trail version for 7 days, then upgrade, think i will do this to get my hands wet (so to speak)

thanks for all advice

You can do a 30 day trial and there are tutorials through Adobe and many YouTubers along with Linda.com. You can also get a book from the library on Lightroom and Photoshop.
