I joined UHH in June about a month after receiving my new Canon 80D. I was finishing up reading David Busch's 80D guide and nearly done all the functionality testing on my new camera. I've spent about an hour every morning reading UHH mostly the Main Photography topics. Then another hour or two reading books and online photography discussions and trying different modes and different shooting assignments with my camera. I know I'm learning, but I sure ain't learning as quickly as I thought I should.

This morning I read the topic about the D7200 and shutter speed settings. I wondered if I could set a minimum shutter speed in the Custom Function settings on my camera. Long story short, I can't. As I was going through the Custom Function Section of Busch's book which I speedily breezed through in June because quite frankly I could barely understand it, I now understand what the CF menus can do and how I can use them to my advantage. I credit UHH and the knowledgeable members for thoughtfully answering all those questions and making me lookup and research topics that I should know.

Thank you all!

Thank you all. It looks as if I should "invest" in an iPhone which is an upgrade from this Android from Wal-Mart, then. Truly, the photos taken with my cell phone are an amateurish joke.

Thanks again. 😀

Since the new iPhone 8 will be unveiled tomorrow?? I did see some ads for fairly cheap iPhone 5 ~ $100. Also older Samsungs and other Androids. They have decent cameras and you can upload straight to Social Media and your web page. I'm not sure but you might just bring your new older model phone with you to the Walmart cell plan.

Best of Luck!

If I spent five grand on a camera, my wife would make sure I no longer blinked. All kidding aside, I would not spend that much as a non pro

I can't speak for anyone else but I can experiment and try different things much more cheaply with digital. And modern PP is far easier to learn than film processing. Hallelujah!

If I was much more experienced and was sure I had L grade lenses, a fast computer with tons of storage, calibrated monitor, PP software, professional printer to take full advantage of what the camera can do, absolutely.
If I had all those things in place and my photography could possibly warrant it, I'd buy a Hasselblad that costs as much as a nice mid priced Crossover....as I was shopping for divorce lawyers. 🙄

I keep doing a double take on the username....so I'm a bit hesitant to draw any conclusions. 😁

I enjoy reading your posts, longer posts can help the information percolate through the brain like fine coffee revitalising the synapses.
A harsh critique or the symptoms of a difficult bowel movement- sometimes it's hard to tell with some people. Reading this thread might suggest the latter dominates.
If a critique resonates maybe they have a point ,maybe not, but take heart it may just be reverberations from the porcelain.

Cute but it leaves an ugly mental picture!

It is a commonly misheld belief that film is dead, or at least passe. Well, film is experiencing a strong revival, and there seem to be new films added regularly to the old standbys that survived film's "demise".
check out the film for sale at the big retailers like Adorama, B&H, Cameta, etc. For a film shooter, times are good regarding choices.

I shoot both digital and film because among the dozen or so cameras that I own and use, more are film than digital. I actually regret having to do so, but I have been listing some of the film bodies here in the classifieds, since I have a problem with eyesight, despite recent cataract surgery. The latest bugaboo is degenerating macular problems. I will still keep a few to stay with film for as long as I can. God bless autofocus.

Beowulf - having had 2 corneal transplants, cataract surgery, and a retinal tear fixed, I can sympathize about eye issues. Fortunately for us, the advancements in treatments for macular degeneration and all eye issues are getting better so I hope you can keep doing what you love!

I was thinking of another use, but I'd likely get banned.

That's what I call my camera when I'm having a bad day Of course it's never the camera's fault.

Yes, it's hard to understand how people can get so upset and make such nasty comments over camera gear.

Exactly!! Yes I understand there are folks that are quite sensitive about critiques of their photos and just want praise not helpful much needed improvement advice. But if someone thinks my gear is complete crap and I'm an idiot for buying what I did, so be it. The snarky comments about different cameras manufacturers, DSLR vs mirrorless, is pretty amusing. I find I read the flames about cameras instead of reading the depressing, ever controversial news stories because in the long-run, I can just laugh and go about my day!

Summary - IF critique is requested, find positive AND helpful items to discuss, in less than 3 minutes. If you are taking more than 3 minutes, or if you are criticizing without being asked... Move on.

BB4A - I think you nailed it IMHO. Finding the positive in the photo to mix with the critique makes it more pleasant and encouraging. I'd rather hear "composition is good but the full moon and city lights are slightly over exposed" than "Geez, why did you even bother, highlights blown out, subject blurry, your dog is ugly.....".

There are many talented, experienced, knowledgeable photographers on UHH that can give very helpful hints to struggling newbies like myself. Giving helpful, kind, suggestions that help but don't hurt or discourage the struggling newbie is a different talent. It's really tricky and frankly pretty discouraging.

It's similar to when your Significant Other asks "Do these jeans make my backside look fat?"

Wrong on that Mercedes, I was stationed in Germany and bought a VW directly from factory and brought home and warranty was good. There must be another answer about camera equipment

I'm not and I've never been a car dealer but I think the price difference in vehicles has to do with EPA and emissions regulation differences between countries plus shipping, tariffs, dealer prep "etcetera, etcetera, etcetera". I'm hoping that importing camera gear is a bit less complex.

I know there's a gray market for instruments. You could buy a gray market Yamaha piano years ago that's far less expensive but the wood wasn't processed for the US climate so if the sound board cracked or split, it was the buyers tough nuggets.
