Just a quick addition -- as someone else mentioned, replication doesn't protect from data corruption -- I always do some significant quasi-random sampling of both old and new data BEFORE bringing in and connecting the offline drives.

Anything on only 2 devices ("original" + backup media) is in serious risk of being lost --- especially if the backup media lives connected to the computer containing the original (or even in the same house/building). Even an enterprise class RAID system isn't an iron-clad guarantee -- I have had them fail and have long ago given up on them for personal use...

The most gut-wrenching sick feeling I can recall having in relation to data was the time my laptop was being used as the demo-running machine at a trade show -- with about 3 months of family pictures that were ONLY on it (including the birth of my niece), it got stolen. That's when I started using external drives & making sure I always had enough memory media to carry the whole shoot/event/trip without needing to offload to keep shooting.

Some serious scares with non-catastrophic drive failures convinced me early on that I would NEVER rely on a single device.

Where I live, the quality of Internet service rules out the cloud (as does most cloud services pricing for my > 750GB photo library and all my other accumulated data & software source).

My current constant / automatic system is 3 data spindles: the primary drive (NOT the system/OS drive) and software that automatically mirrors it to 2 other drives. Oter drives "live" in pelican cases in the trunk of my car and in my garage (which is > 300' from the house). They are brought in and mirrored at least weekly -- more often if I feel it critical. I also have several pairs of drives that are dedicated to specific projects I feel are "extra critical".

This has served me well from the days when a 250GB drive was as big as you could get -- I am in the process of moving from 1TB to 2 TB drives -- swap out a mirror, let it replicate, swap out the next mirror, let it replicate, move the first mirror to the primary position (done with volume labels in my scheme), replace the old original & pop it in as the first mirror and replicate.

Even in the camera I have my D810 configured to write the same data to both the SD & CF cards at the same time. Cards don't get reformatted until I confirm the first layer of replication (3 spindles).

The KME looks very similar to the Lansky system -- I'll have to look at it more closely when I have more than just my phone available.

The Smith's sharpeners are awesome little pocket tools -- I keep one in the kitchen, one in the truck, one in the toolbox, one in the jump kit -- probably several more here and there. The carbide is awesome for quickly bringing a dull edge up to useable sharpness. I also use various Lansky & Spyderco jigs, "classic" stones, and a canvass/leather strop as well.

I always carry at least one knife. Usually a more rugged one that while sharp, usually won't shave, and then a finer knife that will shave. Which one depends on plan of the day, dress, destinations, and just how I feel -- I have acquired dozens over the past half century...
