My D7200 is set to "Back Button Focus", by pressing the "AE-L/AF-L Button" to activate it's focus, and it will not activate when it is pressed, "all of a sudden"; since I made a change, in the camera's settings.

The camera's focus, is set to: AF Continuous, and Focus is on Single center point & A4 Autofocus Activation IS set to Auto Focus ONLY.

Pressing the AE-L/AF-L Button doesn't activate focus operation in any camera mode.

Only when I set the camera to modes: U1 and U2, will the Back Button focus function operate.

If I go into it's menu, and set it to focus, using it's shutter button, it'll focus properly, with the shutter button!

It is set correctly, to use in Back Button Focus mode. Yet, it simply does not, operate, at all.

What I did to the camera, right before this problem began, was I went into it's menu; and I was in it's...

CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU: and in there, I had gone into the f: Controls Menu....

In there, the first item listed is: "OK button"...

In the "OK Button" setting, there are three items; The 1st one is, "Shooting Mode"....

I'd selected that one, and it gave me 3 options:

1) RESET Select center focus point
2) Highlight active focus point
3) None

My camera had been, set to the setting, for "Highlight active focus point", and I changed it, to:
"RESET Select center focus point"

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THAT "RESET" MEANS...DOES "IT" RESET? DO "YOU HAVE TO DO A RESET"???

There are two other changes, that I made to the camera, but I don't think they could've of had anything to do with this issue. I set the Preview and the Function buttons to be Spot Meter and Exposure Hold & Lock, respectively.

After I'd made these THREE changes to the camera, I tried using it, and the Back Button Function, no longer operated. Yet, it's setting was still intact. When I tried setting the camera to focus, using the shutter button,
it did operate OK, in that, way.

When I set the camera's Mode dial, to previously stored, "U1 & U2 Settings," the Back Button Focus did, operate properly, yet, when I again, took the mode dial back off, of those U1 & U2 settings, and put it back, onto any other setting, the camera would again, not Back Button Focus any more.

I'm trying to avoid having to do another reset on this camera if possible, I've had to do several in the past, for other things similar to this.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.
My D7200 is set to "Back Button Focus", ... (show quote)

First, Make sure A4 AF activation says 'off'. If it does not, use the navigation dial to set it to AF ON only. Next, go to f4 and make sure the AE-L/AF-L button is set for AF ON. Maybe something happened to reset those? That should be all you have to do. Also, make sure the AF/MF switch is set to AF (I've done that before).

Lake Moraine is located near Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. Both are extremely scenic. Photos are taken on the road between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake and at Lake Moraine. The first of Lake Moraine is capturing foreground, middle ground, and background. The last is middle ground and background. Guess the better photo is in the eyes of the beholder. VISIT THE ICE FIELD PARKWAY IF YOU CAN and take the best camera you can afford with a tripod and polarizing filter.

I've been experimenting taking photos at the feeder. First day, decided to put the camera (D7200) on the tripod with a speedlight mounted on it and one on a stand, various speeds from 1/5000 to 1/8000. Today, decided to put two speedlights on stands and sit out on the patio with 70-200 2.8 and take some handheld. There's still a little noise in these, so will probably have to invest in another speedlight if I want to take full advantage of HSS.

Superb action shots Jim. All are terrific, but I'm awarding big blue ribbons to #4 and #6.

Thanks! I was surprised at how high in the air they were able to jump to put some power and direction on the ball. I guess it happens so fast that my brain doesn't really realize it.

How much work was needed in Post - - or were these SOOC ??
Fabulous shots - -
What about the team on the other side of the net ??

Honestly, I could have posted SOOC and they would have been just as good, I think. A couple shots were cropped, just because I tried to capture as much of the action as I could (I know pros could do that at full zoom). For most, I added a little vibrance, and use the lightroom correction for lens and chromatic aberration, which is pretty standard.

There wasn't a team on the other side--it was a coach serving balls up to them (or they were serving to him and the other player).

Great action shots. Did you have any delay from the time you pressed the shutter 'til the camera took the photo? Mahalo for sharing.

Thanks, Joanne! There was a slight delay acquiring focus, but it was very slight. I think I only missed maybe two or three shots I wanted because I incorrectly anticipated where the ball was going.
