Reminds me of when our safari trek group was walking through the bush; an overweight, older guy asked me if I was worried about a lion attacking us. He was obviously concerned about whether he could run fast enough. I just pointed out that he didn't need to be fastest but only to make sure he wasn't last. How he arranged that I left up to him!

Mirror lens main advantages are low weight and short length & so are suitable when these qualities are demanded - mountaineering? No one has mentioned the tell-tale mirror lens effect on background highlights which are shown in the images as doughnut rings. This is an artifact related directly to the circular structure of the mirror with the central hole through which the light rays enter the camera body to strike the sensor. A friend of mine hated this effect as his favourite subject- seashore birds were surrounded by light rings from the sunlight on waves etc. they looked like they were on a stage set with backlights. If a dark background is part of the shot then this problem is eliminated - hence they are okay for moonshots as suggested by another contibutor above.

The version I heard was:
A young English guy went mountaineering in South America and had to take a short haul flight in a small plane with an Irishman, Scotsman and a Welshman as his co-passengers. After one engine cut out the pilot announced that someone would have to bale out to give the rest a chance to land safely - this has to work as there is only one parachute on board! Paddy quickly weighs up the situation & reckons that the parachute offers the best chance of survival so grabs it, straps it on and jumps out without further discussion. The others are too surprised to stop him but the Scotsman asks "What do we do if someone else has to baleout?" The English guy said "Relax. I'll do it........Paddy jumped with my rucksack!!"

Just remembered a tip that may be of interest to photographers who forget to carry the instruction manual for their camera with them. Download the PDF file for your camera from the Nikon/Canon/whatever website to your PC and add it to Evernote to be synchronised with your phone. For you owners of Kindle e-readers, the same trick can be done to have the PDF manual available; especially useful on holiday when trying to keep baggage weight down.

My use of Evernote is centred on having my smartphone always with me. Evernote is the most flexible database I've found so far in that I can make short typed notes, dictate a memo, take a snapshot and allocate any of them to whatever notebook I care to use. My wife and I are keen gardeners and I often take a photo of a plant/flower and it's label and send it to my gardening notebook for consideration when drawing up a planting plan later. Last week I had to replace a cooker hood filter so I took a photo of the Model No label. At the spares shop I proved to the shopkeeper that his parts catalogue was incorrect by showing him my photos on my phone. Anything I save on my phone is automatically synchronised with Evernote on my PC next time I switch it on so all my data can be backed up. The more I use it the more I like it!
