Trains would be a nice alternative way of travel even today if they weren't so expensive. They're about as expensive as flying. So, why not fly?

Depending on the trip, I'd much prefer a train.

Our local Walmart is now about 90% self check, with MANY checkout stations, HOWEVER most of those are closed at any given moment, so there are still long lines of customers waiting to checkout. What?!

I asked an employee why most of the self checkouts were unavailable. He told me that there had to be an employee watching what was going on for each group of self checkouts. So in order to open all the checkouts, there would have to be more employees there to monitor the checkouts. SMH. They're going to make you wait in long lines no matter how much money they've wasted installing dozens of self checkouts that never get used.

Theft has soared at self checkouts, too. Sounds like the self checkout trend is reversing...hopefully.

Correct!

When my son was working at Walmart while he was in high school, he come home early one day. He said they had a Code 37, or whatever it was. There were too many employees working for the manager to get his bonus. Unfortunately, stores have to pay their employees, and that eats into profits and bonuses.

In my area (very high population), the grocery stores, Walmart, Home Depot, etc. . . all have more than one employee working the DIY area while having plenty of registers opened during peak hours. It's been --and continues to be-- a good experience for me.

Some stores want to keep costs down - by having employees stay home.

Do you look at an oil painting and question what brand of paint was used

You don't?!

Actually, the early masters often had to make their own paint. Today, we can buy all colors and shades with a few clicks online.

Does anyone have experience with CarMax warranty?

There's a guy on YouTube who would buy supercars from CarMax and then go back to them to have them repaired when they inevitably broke down. I think he had pretty good success.

A common recommendation seems to be, "Don't."

Lots of info here -

You get hit by a truck while walking, and you are worried about a camera???

He's a true photographer!

Of course, he didn't mention that he was walking down the center of an unlit road at night - wearing black. 😂 I'm sure the insurance company will ask for details like that.

I’m not entirely sure. My wife and son sat through the finance manager’s sales pitches during the paper signing and the one-year coverage included thing like dents, scratches and tire damage so it might be some form of extra cosmetic coverage that’s part of the usual 3/36 coverage. Perhaps he was pressuring them to extend that warranty. You know what that’s like and after 20 minutes of sales babble for extra services, they retained little.

I remember buying cars in the "old days." I'd sit down with a salesman and hash out the details. End of story. Now, I have to meet with several people, each of whom is trying to get more money out of me.

How about all those Boeing B-17s that crashed and burned in the 1940s? It's a wonder that Boeing even survived into the 1950s.

They survived and thrived - until they went down the wrong path.

We need more sections so people can post and find things easily. Currently, we have only fifty-five sections! What kind of a forum is this? Everything is so general! We need more specificity! (Yes, I am kidding.)

I was in a wreck where a drunk guy t-boned my truck. My wrist was smashed in the process, and I went immediately to the hospital. He went to jail. His insurance company adjuster said that it was a good company and I would get justice from them. But they immediately started backing down. So I hired a lawyer. And I really hate lawyers. But he got all my medical bills paid (including months of PT), and a lot more for my truck than they were offering. It was painless (at least the lawyer part). I understand the idea that you don't want the headache of dealing with all of this. The lawyer will do that for you. Make sure you get a reputable one and let him/her handle everything.

Good! Insurance companies usually back down. When I had MetLife for house and cars, they were absolutely excellent! Fast service and full payment. They switched me to Farmers a couple of years ago, and I hope I never have a claim.

I'm not pleased to hear this. I love self check-out and would not be happy standing in line waiting for someone else to ring up my purchases. On that same note, I am irritated that my state (NJ) does not allow self-service at a gas station. I can do all these things better and faster myself.

Where self-checkouts are in use, there is often just one or no regular registers open. That results in long lines at the DIY registers. Also, they will often assign just one employee to oversee all those DIYs, and he can't service three problems at once.

I never use DIY when I have produce because I have to look a code and then enter it. DIY can be very fast is the person knows how to use it, but many have no idea.

An acceptable "pain".

We had a local medical system hack because an employee was lax. One shortcoming resulted in embarrassment for the company and weeks of work.
