In May 2024, physical media is a old as the doodoo bird. People don't sell software on CD / DVD. Users, regardless of what they think, don't need physical media either. Buy a USB-connected device if you think otherwise.

There is still a market for recorded movies, DVD, Blu Ray, 4K Blu Ray. It's small but hanging on. All of the new blockbuster movies are released on discs. Some people want hard copies of their favorite movies and not rely on streaming services. Some have noticed that 4K discs look significantly better on a good 4K TV than the streaming option (less compression on the discs). I know fully that my thousand or so discs will likely end up in the dump when I'm gone, but I still buy a disc now and then.

If you want to convert your discs to files to watch another way, you still need an optical drive. External is fine. I've never had a problem with LG drives.

You only need one optical drive to copy discs. The software prompts you to swap out the source disc for the blank disc when it is time.

I wonder why the LED doesn't last as long as the incandescent. Normally the incandescent is rated for 1000 hrs and the LED is 50,000. I guess they over current them to get them very bright thus shorten their life.

Most of the LED lights in my house have lasted longer than I would expect incandescent bulbs to last, however I've had to replace 4 of them that failed rather quickly. 3 were the same kind of the same brand. Perhaps this is a quality control issue.

Sellers use eBay to print the label. In the past, I would pack, measure, and weigh the item and determine the shipping charge. .

I managed to sell one item on eBay last year, a Christmas ornament. eBay calculated the shipping charge, I paid it and printed the label. The label came with a tracking number. The problem was that they underestimated the shipping charge. The post office would not allow me to add on postage. They had to charge me the full amount and print their own label. Not only did I have a useless label that I could not use, neither eBay nor the buyer could track the shipment to determine if it was on the way or delivered. I assume that because I eventually got paid and the buyer said nothing that the item got to the buyer.

I sat in the car waiting for the owls to show when this little chap trotted up and stopped 10ft from me . I took a few shots as he kept looking at me then he wandered off and then returned for another session. It was most appreciated and I hope I have done him justice.

These are excellent pictures. Farmers over there have a different opinion of these creatures, but I think they're cute. Thank you.

It was originally posted in Main Photography. It ended up in the Attic because some trolls insisted on making political posts, so Admin moved it.

I have to admit that I suspected this thread would end up in the attic sooner or later. It lasted about 8 pages before that happened. There was some reasonable discussion about displaying pictures of one's gun collection. Most people felt it was okay. I felt it was no different from posting pictures of a vintage car collection. Different hobbies for different folks. Then the politics started and then the flame throwing. Pretty d********g.

I'd like to say something here, and I'm not going to take sides. There is a lot of photography discussed on UHH and a lot of photos displayed. There is some chit-chat that some people like and some people h**e. This is a really a social media site, and when people post stuff about politics and religion on social media, it can come back to bite them in the ass if they ever have to look for a job or be considered for a promotion. Many employers now insist on viewing someone's social media posts before hiring. If they don't like what they see, they'll show you the door. I don't know why so many threads deteriorate into the Attic. If you really want to discuss politics or religion in some inflammatory way, there are other places to do that, and if you do, you may suffer unexpected consequences in real life.

I just tried the silent shutter for the 1st time on my Sony A7iii and experienced banding. After searching I found out this is a common problem. I always thought mirrorless cameras were silent by the nature of its construction and an artificial sound was added to simulate a mirrored camera. An article said "This is normal for cameras with electronic shutters. Due to pulsing of the lights." Electonic shutters as opposed to what? What are the pros and cons of each, other than the banding?

I just looked this up, since I don't use an electronic shutter. The problem occurs with LED lighting, very common now. On some cameras, the anti-flicker feature can help as well as shutter speeds that are multiples of 60 Hz. Maybe someone else knows more about this.

Around page 8, Admin moved the topic from chit-chat to The Attic.

I am not a UHH administrator; I just pay attention to how stuff works here.

I was a volunteer manager of Post-Processing section a couple of times, and most recently was co-manager of Digital Artistry. Am currently free of all responsibilities

Page 8 was when people started talking about other countries, pro and con. That's sort of political. I could see what was coming next. Too bad, though overall I think that this was a polite and intelligently discussed thread.

Amazon's expert in India said I was mistaken about what the $2.99/month provided.

Expert? Nonsense. I'm getting what I pay for, so they don't know what they're talking about. I'm sure you could get this resolved if you want to, but it sounds like you'd rather just move on.

I have been getting calls from people with Indian accents claiming to be from the local power company. I don't know what they want me to give them because I hang up.

I barely come here anymore. The political posts are absurd in a forum that is supposed to be about photography. They have no place here. It is indicative of the sickness of American society. I'm so glad I have a place to live outside the US.

This is not a political thread. It could have gone that way, but it didn't. If you don't want to see political posts, don't look in the Attic. There is no more sickness in someone posting pictures of their gun collection than there is in someone posting pictures of a collection of old cars. If you don't want to see pictures of guns (or cars, or birds or anything else), just skip over them when they're posted.

Are you sure about that?

EDITED: I just got this from Amazon - "If you'd like to watch Prime Video movies and TV shows without ads again, go to Your Account to sign up for ad free." I did that, tried that, and quit that. I was still getting ads on everything five days later.

I'm paying for no ads. I don't get any ads in anything I watch. Is it just your luck? I have no explanation. I'd be interested in hearing anyone else's experience.

With the past few days postings it appears this site needs to be re-named: "Guns and Ammo and BTW a Few Words About Photography".

How has this happened? Aren't the editors reviewing postings any longer?

For we photographers it is a waste of bandwidth.

Why should pictures of guns be forbidden but pictures of old cars not. Different hobbies for different folks. Is there any implication that the guns should be misused? No, just sk**lfully taken pictures of guns, some of historical significance to some people.

Yep, you’ve got to be very careful sharing your genetic information on sites such as 23 and Me - it can lead to unpleasant surprises.

Like paternity and unknown siblings or half-siblings, always a can of worms for all involved. I wouldn't expect anything like that from my parents, but such things are going to bite some people in the ass.

A recent post about the youth and our vets got me thinking about my Ancestry. I have no children, so there is no one to pass the information on to. Growing up in the 50's and 60's, my interest in what life was like for my parents and grandparents was nil, only interested in playing and what was for diner. I lost my father when I was 12 and my mother when I was 23, My grand parents pass away when I was younger.
As I got older, I began wondering about what life was like for my parents and grandparents.
Now I have questions,
1. What was life like when my parents first got married? How much money did they make and what kind of work did they do?
2. How much did there first house cost?
3. What kind of entertainment did they have? radio, TV, movies
4. What was the cost of Gas for the car and what brand of car did they own?
5. What was it like when they were growing up?

These same question can be used about our Grandparents. Although many on this site, have children, they may not be that interested about the past family history today, In the future they begin to wonder, when it is too late to ask there parents.
May I suggest, that you create a loose leaf note book and start writing down some of your past history of what life was like in your early years and what information you have on your Grandparents.
In years to come, your children will become very grateful.
Just my two cents
A recent post about the youth and our vets got me ... (show quote)

I'm all for obtaining general information from Ancestry sites. My ancestors came mostly from England and Scotland and settled in the South. On the other hand, I won't put myself out there for distant relatives to find me and start chatting. My son put his information into one site and was contacted by some wacko women in the midwest who is the illegitimate daughter of a relative of my wife we've never had contact with, demanding that he contact this relative and tell him that she has a right to have contact with him. Not only that, his attorney had already gotten a restraining order against her.
