I'd take advantage of the offer and get a new camera. Even if the current one works, it likely will have a shortened life. Too bad you don't have access to a camera repair shop to check it out. So true about zoning out. I have to listen for rattlers when I'm out and about, and sometimes I'm so engrossed in my shot I forget!
