Our old detectors used 9V batteries, which I replaced once a year, but the detectors themselves still expired.
The 10 year batteries in our new units are not replaceable,
plus, the units expire in 10 years.....
I wish they'd put 10 year batteries in, but the builder used the cheapest batteries they could find. We've only been in the house 2 1/2 years. We had one go off within the first year and have several go off since.
