A friend and I will be traveling from the Alligator Farm in St Augustine after photographing the rookery there north in middle April. We want to stop at Santee NWR and Alligator River on the way. Does anyone have any experience at either of these two locations to share? The websites are fine but your personal experience would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
Going there myself. Waiting for replies.
How about posting some pictures from the Alligator Farm!
I have visited Santee River NWR and had a great time. Hoewever it was 10 yr ago
I was at Alligator River in NC about three or four years ago. I was in Kitty Hawk and went on two different days. The rangers do tours, some focused on bears and red wolves. I was unable to do one, so can’t comment. I did see bears, some looked bigger than black bears I had seen before. I did not and you will not see red wolves. There were few of them there when I went and less of them now. I read somewhere the govt has ended or will end the protection program for the red wolves, which is sad. A couple of nights a week, rangers take out tours to listen to the wolves howl. The landscape is beautiful, with miles of water ways to explore and canoe rentals are available at a couple of places. The roads are all hard packed dirt and well maintained. I found it to be really interesting and want to go back in spring or summer, when I’m sure there are more creatures to see.
Look for the Aligator tour guide with one arm. We stopped off there twenty years ago with our seven year old daughter. The tour was great and the head guide gave a great show for the children. He told us we should stay for the late afternoon feeding of this huge gator. We were on a tight schedule and thank goodness we left without watching the big feed. Later that evening while in our hotel room we found out that the huge gator bit the guides arm off during the show. Ask about him if has since retired. This is the truth not made up. Our daughter is now twenty-seven and still remembers the show and the TV news. I may be off on the years as it could be more than twenty.
