I was at Ellis Island with a 600mm and a tripod, and was told by a ranger to stop taking pictures of the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. It was 6.7 miles away. He claimed that it was against the law to do so due to Homeland Security concerns. I explained that the bridge was far enough away, and only an element in a landscape, and he said "it doesn't matter." I then pointed out the 100 or so tourists, all of whom were taking pictures of the harbor with their cameras, and asked if he was going to stop them from taking pictures as well. He said no. So I invited him to have a look through my viewfinder, and showed him he had nothing to worry about. His response was WOW! when he saw what I was shooting. I then brought up images on my smartphone that had far greater detail of the bridge, even during construction, that presented more of a problem - especially because they were widely available.

A second time was when I was cycling on the West Side Highway bike path, which passes under the George Washington Bridge - and I stopped to take a picture with my cellphone - the same concerns were expressed by a ranger, but this time I just moved on. It wasn't that important.

Not anywhere near the best places, but those two times were the only times I was asked not to take pictures.

The Amber Room at Catherine Palace, St. Petersburg. I was admonished by cries of "Nyet, nyet!!". Ok for photos elsewhere in the palace, just not in that room. I shot off twice with my quiet Olympus anyway.

Found this - interesting rules the Alamo posts - you are not allowed to take pic's of it, but they can of you - for their use - no compensation...

Rules of Reverence

The Alamo has a unique set of rules befitting its status as the Shrine of Texas Liberty and hallowed ground. Please read the rules before entering the Alamo to ensure a respectful and pleasant visit.

Guests, please remove your hats inside the historic Church
No open food or drinks are allowed inside the Church, Long Barracks, or Annex
No camera or cell phone use permitted inside the historic structures.
No pets (Service animals allowed in accordance with the ADA)
No obscene or offensive language on clothing
No jogging, bicycles, skateboards, hoverboards or drones
No alcohol, smoking, vaping or other use of tobacco products
No professional photography or videography (Prior coordination required)
No unauthorized firearms (Concealed and open carry allowed with permit only)
No soliciting, disruptive or disrespectful behavior

A visit to the Alamo and/or attendance at events is an agreement by the participant and/or the parent of guardian to allow the Alamo to photograph and/or film participants without compensation for possible use in digital/print marketing and publicity efforts. Please contact the Alamo’s marketing director at 210-225-1391 with questions or requests to exempt your image from potential promotional use.

If you are involved with street photography do you compensate the people you photograph?

The construction of the Verrazano bridge and whatever concerns now exist were of no concern at that time. Muslim terrorists did not hijack planes and fly them into two buildings until decades later. He was only doing his job. I'm sure he was not involved in the why of it. You must have gotten lucky. I have never seen a Ranger or any law enforcement on that walkway/bike path.

Interesting, I believe that I once read that the Alamo that is visited by tourist is not the original. That the current one is or was built as a stage set for the movie. Does any on know for sure? I was there several years ago and took photos with no trouble.

Jazz/R&B Festival. They said my camera was professional and I needed creditials and approval. I was using a Canon XSI with a Canon 70-300mm lens. Other cameras were there but I was the only one singled out. My wife thought this funny.

The Alamo in downtown San Antonio is the original. The Alamo you are referring to is in a place called Alamo Village about 130 miles from San Antonio and North of Brackettville. Unfortunately is is permanently closed. It was actually more of what you think of as the Alamo, then the original.

Could also be considered stupid.

My son's wedding at Cape Coral. It was a Native Indian theme wedding with Native Indians. They told me if I took ANY pictures they would throw ALL of my photo gear in the canal. My son talked to the leader and I was allowed some of the ceremony. Wedding was not on their property, but at his friends home, outside.
