If I use a local store's expertise, then I buy locally. They've spent time, which is money, and shared their knowledge to help me, so I feel that I should then buy from them.

I wouldn’t recommend gray market, but Adorama and B&H are reputable and sell new cameras with the full factory warranty.

Not to mention that B&H and Adorama ARE local camera stores to their regions so they have to deal with locals

For me B&H and Adorama are a train ride (some what local) away and charge me tax.

I've finally decided to buy the Fuji X-T3 w/18-55mm - financial stretch but satisfied with choice. Dilemma is:
Local price = $1699 black body & lens + 8.75% CA sales tax - no extras, buy good people.
Adorama = same price w/ accessories bundle no tax - if I buy B4 April 15
B&H = same price + abbreviated bundle - no tax
I have never dealt with the online retailers and am a little nervous after reading a few negative reviews. Yet many of you seasoned UHHers seem to have good luck buying from online camera retailers.
Comments & Help would not be turned away.
As always many thanks.

I have bought from B&H for many years, always satisfied with all aspects of my purchase. But I am just one in a thousand customers. They are not perfect and mistakes and errors do occasionally occur. I have not purchased anything from Adorama as yet, but I most likely will sometime, but I am sure they will be Ok 95% of the time too.

Are you sure about the no tax? B&H at least started collecting sales tax within the last few months, at least for my state.

If my local store has the camera I want at the same price as B&H and Adorama, I will buy it, even if B&H has a 4% bonus offered. I like to support my local store when I can. But, that said, if my local store does not have the item I am looking for, I will then go the B&H and Adorama in that order.
I don't get your quote,"am a little nervous after reading a few negative reviews". B&H has one of the highest ratings in the US for on line retailers. I have dealt with them over 15 years and they have always taken care of me on returns, questions, etc. Yes Virginia, they ARE that good. If you have an issue, you call B&H customer service and they take care of you.
And the people that are not happy with B&H wouldn't be happy if they could walk on water, so, no worries mate.

I’m of two minds on this. First B&H and Adorama are superb retailers that provide expert service, advice and stand by what they sell, so no worries there. I used to buy exclusively from B&H (no sales tax because I’m out of state) until I got better acquainted with my local store, Hunt’s ( also a fine internet retailer). They too offered excellent advice and prices but have to charge sales tax because they’re in Massachusetts as am I. They were/are so good to me and offer so much more, like classes and instructor led photowalks, that I now buy almost exclusively from them. I also feel guilty wasting their time helping me make a decision if I’m not going to buy from them. I do still buy from B&H if Hunt’s doesn’t have what I want in stock. Long answer, sorry.

It may have been a long answer, Mizzee, but it was the right answer.

I bought local till they closed their doors, now buy lens and bodies direct from Canon. Who knows when the vendor will get bought out or merge. Seem like the vendors are selling/pushing computers, drones and non photography items.

With the online competition, local vendors are having trouble staying in business. They also have to sell other things like computers, drones and non-photography items to stay in business. That's why I buy locally. I don't want to lose that photography advice and the opportunity to try before I buy.

Buy local or they won’t be their to help you in the future. I’m sure that’s where you went to get your hands on it

Thank you. You have articulated all the reasons I will buy from a shop 6 minutes from my house. Appreciate your clarity on the subject.

Look at Amazon, too. I've bought from both Adorama and B&H with satisfaction. But double check on the no sales tax. The law has changed to require the collection of sales tax -- or a judge ruled that way. Others here may give you better information.

Had a fairly similar dilemma recently. Wanted to buy a new Nikon camera. Grey imports were considerably cheaper and were offering a similar "Vendors warranty" as opposed to the Nikon Australia supplied camera with Nikon warranty. Decided on the local seller at the higher price with full factory warranty.
After 5 weeks broke a control dial (possibly user error). The entire top of the camera had to be replaced. Was pretty pleased with My decision then. Granted that is not the norm.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Buying gray market and paying local sales tax is not equivalent.

Yeah - they matched the price and threw in a few accessories of better quality and free class. Thank you.
