I’m going to Israel, Jordan (Amman and Petra) and Egypt in late October. I’m obsessing about what camera bag to pack and whether I should just stick with my SONY RX 10 IV and it’s brother the 100 V or get a Canon 28 to 300 zoom and stick it on my 80D and call it a day. If I go with the 80 D I know that I’m going to have to lug some of my wide angle glass (at a minimum my EF-S 10 to 18) and have to deal with changing lenses and carrying a much heavier bag. While if I go with the Sonys, I’m only loosing 18 mm (from the EF-S 10mm to the Sony’s 28 mm on the short side but gaining almost double the zoom on the long end.
Did I just talk myself into the Sonys? Thoughts or suggestions?
My opinion only.
If you are traveling for only the purpose of photography, then take the best equipment you have and live with the inconvenience.
If you are traveling for pleasure and the experience of a new place and learning about the people in the places you visit but want to take a few photos while you are doing it, then travel light.
but don't expect the hogs to be your brains for you. You know why you are traveling, we don't. If you already own the cameras you are asking us to decide for you which to take, then you already know how much technical ability you are giving up in exchange for practicality. I/m sure your Sony has panorama capabilities that can replace the last 18 mm of Wide angle. I just bought a used Sony HX 80 with a 24-720 mm zoom lens (full frame equivalent) and 18 mp sensor
I can carry it in my shirt pocket It is sharp from 24-550 mm and acceptable from 550-720. Digital noise becomes an issue starting about ISO 1320.
If it's reasonably well lit, the photos are, technically, quite good and suffer from my inabilities , not the camera's The weak link is the 12 inches behind the camera. Canon and nikon and panasonic and Olympus among others make cameras with similar convenience and capabilities
Heres a test shot of my bookshelves ISO 3200 720mm distance 12 ft taken with the Sony HX 80 on a tripod this morning. (I'm shakey so my practical handholding limit is about 550mm on a good day.)
Insight is what HOGS do best and I thank you for yours. The remaining issue is my wife - you can fill in the blanks. You know how that one goes. Thanks again.

My number one rule for travel gear is light and compact. My number two rule is wide and fast. I have never needed anything longer than 100mm and rarely go beyond 70mm. However, I sometimes wish I had a little bit wider than 24mm and faster than f/4 and always wish I had something 4oz lighter and 1/4” smaller.
Don’t know about Jordan, but for Egypt, something you can keep concealed in your pocket and that you are not going to worry about would be your best choice.
Get a packet of Antinal at the first pharmacist you see. It is the only thing that works for Egyptian Tummy or be prepared to spend 4 days on the ‘throne’.
Was in Egypt & Jordan last year, Israel few years before and don't remember anything that your 28 mm wouldn't be wide enough if you want to limit yourself, but telephoto used often. Be aware you will often be in fine sandy areas and less/no lens changes are better while in the elements. And, if you plan to climb inside to the Tomb Room at the Pyramid of Giza, slip a small camera in your pocket or take your phone. They don't allow large or visible cameras. Finally, light weight is better at Petra, especially if you are walking in, and climbing steps to the Monastery.
And, don't listen to horror stories -Israel & Amman totally safe, Egypt use common sense - I go on the streets all the time with my camera (with strap wrapped tightly around my wrist). Obviously only bottled water in Egypt, but I ate from small shops all the time. (Also going back in October for Nile Cruise & Luxor).
Enjoy, these are truly three amazing places.
Thank you - great advice.

It may be dry and dusty in that region of the world. I wouldn't want to be in that situation having to change lenses while the winds may be blowing dust and possibly sand. The Sony RX10iv Bridge camera is the best on the market today. And Sony pocket cameras are highly regarded. I know, I own one of them.

We're taking the same trip next month. I'm planning on taking my 80D and 18-135 lens. I also have the 10-22 and 55-250, but probably won't take them.

We were there in 2011 and I packed my Nikon D50 and 18-200mm Nikon Lens. The only photo opportunities I missed was night time on the Nile. Attached is an unedited photo of Petra. I would suggest you pack a good camera, a couple of lenses, and have a great time!
Having completed a 6-week long National Park tour with all my gear, I can tell you that you’ll probably only use 2 of your lenses 99% of the time. I think the Sonys will be your best bet. Trust your instinct and remember to take time to enjoy the moment! Have fun!
Do yourself a favor and go with the Sony's. Sony bridge cameras can handle any photographic situation as well as the Canon and you don't have to worry about carrying extra lens.
The RX10 IV is a great camera. Take it.
I travel with a full frame camera and a 28-300 Tamron lens. Several trips to Europe and the Med area.

I guess the Sonys.
I always travel with a 10-18, 24-105 and a 100-400.
And all 3 get equally used
