The TG 5 is waterproof and has a number of attachments to make it even more useful. It gets an excellent review in dpReview. It’s definately on my GAS list after doing a lot of research.

https://www.backscatter.com/ Go to this website. They have a great video on TG-5. I have one and I love it. I don’t have the waterproof housing, I just use the camera as is and following all the care directions. I have only used my camera in a swimming pool to test it out and took photos of peoples legs and feet but it worked very well. There are a zillion settings on this camera and videos show you ‘how to’s’ that the camera doesn’t even advertise.

I love my TG-5. Go to this web site. They have great videos on operating the TG-5 which includes all kinds of settings that aren’t even advertised. https://www.backscatter.com/

How is that determination made?

If you're getting paid, it's pro. If you're not, it's amateur. Any other criteria are entirely subjective in "classifying" a camera.

I bought the Nikon W300 for my sister, a non-photographer. She spends a lot of time in Hawaii & Australia and wanted to make pictures underwater. Seems like a pretty good little camera. I'm thinking of getting one for myself. Certainly compact enough to fit in a purse without causing excess weight or bulk.

Actually most reviews give an edge to the Olympus. Neither is “pro”. They both have 1/2.3” sensors. The Nikon is 16mp to 12mp for the Olympus, although the TG-5 is supposed the do better in low light. Nikon gets the edge in zoom, 5x to 4x, (which isn’t important under water), and in depth, 100 feet to 50 feet. But one big edge for Olympus is that it shoots raw and the Nikon doesn’t.

And all that being said, I have a nice little 16mp Fujifilm XP130 that I paid a little over $100 for that I bought for paddle boarding. I haven’t really tried it underwater yet. That’ll come next month when I’m kayaking and snorkeling in the Bahamas.

Nikonos works very well for underwater photography.

I plan on using it on my vacations which usually include scuba diving and snorkeling. We have an upcoming trip to Grand Turk and I want to make sure I have a relatively easy camera that can go at least 50 feet deep. I am only certified as an open water diver. May consider advanced open water but 60 feet is deep enough for me for now.

A lot depends on how deep you want to go and what kind of photos you want to take. I suggest you take a look at the Sealife DC2000. It is more expensive but it does a lot more. It is a 20mp camera with a 1 inch sony sensor. It not only has all the built-in settings you find in any point and shoot but it also has aperture and shutter priority and you caneven set it on manual. It no t only shoots jpegs but also shoots raw photos, a real benefit when you're post-processing. Also it does HD video. I looked at specs for the TG-5 and ruled it out because it is only rated to 50 ft. The Nikon seems a good camera but it seemed a bit limited for what I wanted.
The DC2000 is actually a camera and underwater housing all in one. In the housing the camera is rated to 200 feet. I've never been that deep but I often go below 100. The camera can be removed from its housing and used on land It's nice and light and while it doesn't have the range or versatility of my Nikon 7200 it great to just shove in your jacket pocket when you go for a walk or a drive.
I realize that this maybe more than you want, but if your going to get advanced offshore qualification, you probably will want a camera that can go deep. BTW below 40 feet you usually need a light and the built-in flashes (the DC2500 has one too) are pretty useless
Photo taken at about 65 ft with the DC2500 and attached Seadragon light.

You will be unhappy with either of your options. They will flood. They are really made for, at most, shallow snorkeling. I use them for kayaking where they might get wet and submerged 3 feet. I recommend either a gopro set for stills, or a housed camera. Also, you will want some form of external flash held a bit away from the camera to illuminate the screen while minimizing back scatter. I second the opinion to contact Backscatter in Monterey for advice. They have all levels of equipment. Enjoy your diving, and stay safe.

go to the top of the page to the search section;put in w/p cameras and you should get many discussions on this subject,IT has been talked about many times. I have used a Nicon AW100 for about 5 years on many w/w rafting trips and ski trips and am happy with it but the Panasonis Lumix FT7 looks good and it has a viewfinder which the Nicon and the Olympus TG 5 does not have and was on sale for $300.00 last week.IT usually sells for $450.00.
