Can anyone recommend a good free photo editing software that I can download?
Picasa, Paint.Net, GIMP, ...

If you want things to be simple for post processing try Windows Live Photo Gallery. You need either Windows Vista or Windows 7 on your laptop or PC. I'll agree with the above comments with these additions: more tools than Picasa, easier than Paint.net, much simpler than Gimp, never tried FastStone. Good luck. I'd try them all.
picmonkey.com is free and pretty easy to use.
I've had good results with IrfanView.

Faststone, hands down.
Yes ! Faststone has a couple of programmes, both very professional and useful. I used them for years before I splashed the cash on ACDSEE pro 5.
Free & Good go together with Photo.Net.
Very good program!
Have found Photoscope extremely easy to navigate around. If you can read, you can use this program, simple as that.Plus it's free....

Pardon me, I'll disagree - this is my first attempt at cloning with FastStone, and it took a LOT out!
Look in the building - and the stop sign disappeared!
