It's an excellent camera and a decent kit lens. I still have my D5000 as an emergency spare to my D7100 & D500. The value of the D5000 is so little that it makes more sense to hang on to it as a backup than to try to sell it, unless an opportunity comes along to donate that body.

The D5200 is the first DSLR camera I ever owned. Mine came with a kit lens and worked flawlessly. In particular, I liked the layout of the controls. I bought a helpful guide on Amazon from David Busch and can recommend the one by Rob Sylvan as well. Sold it to a friend, not due to any dissatisfaction. I can recommend it.

D5200 was my first DSLR, fairly light weight, excellent sensor (24 mg) and the lens is adequate. I put a 35mm 1.8f on it and to this day that combo works great. It is now my backup to my D750 (very heavy). When I am hiking in the nearby mountains all day, I take the D5200 with 18-140mm lens. That is all I need for good IQ. Stick with it, the camera will serve you well. And you are responsible for composition, not the camera.

Great camera. As others mentioned it was also my first dSRL, and I really loved it.
Unfortunately I had to sell it when I upgrade to my current D7200. I wish I could have keep it (but needed the cash), and I am still missing the flipping screen once in a while.

That combo will allow you to develop your skills without issues, and in the future you will be able to identify which your "next move" should be (based on your experience and preferences).

Yes, it is a great starting combo. By the way, such combo is very capable of producing fine images but it requires skills from you.
If you have not done it yet begin to learn basic photography and learn how to operate the camera.
Very soon you will be an expert.

Yes, it is. I have a D5100, and it takes fine pictures.
