Any Apple users who have migrated from iPhoto to Photo? Do the images stay in their assigned folders and albums during the changeover? Any hints? Was it complicated?

I have been putting this off for some time out of fear that my wonderfully organized photos (by topic) won’t stay in their designated locations.

Thanks for any help!!

I did that a long time ago, and had no problems. I think Photos was merely a big update to iPhoto with added features. I've had no issues with Photos.

Has anyone learned exactly where Photos stores the image files. An invisible folder?

I migrated from Apple's Aperture to Photos years ago with no problems. I'm not familiar with iPhoto's cataloging system, but Photos' cataloging system was different than Aperture's, but it wasn't difficult to get used to the difference.
FYI when Apple first brought Photos out it was pretty basic, since then Apple has upgraded and improved Photos. It is a really good program.

I haven't tried the latest Photos, but perhaps two years ago I tested it and found that it did not keep Added Descriptions. Has this changed? That was the reason I have yet to make the change.

I put off upgrading to photos for years due to reading complaints on line about what went wrong etc from other users.
When I eventually succombed I was surprised that the upgrade went very smoothly and that all iphoto events were just replaced by albums keeping the original name
Since then ive found Photos is way ahead of iphoto in a lot of regards. You can edit in things like nik software or photoshop or lightroom, directly from photos without having to drag a photo onto the desktop and starting the import process from there. Cant find anything to complain about at all.

To find Photo files on a Mac:

1. Go to the Finder and click on Pictures on the left or navigate to Pictures through your HD or computer name (also on the left)
2. Locate the item called Photos Library in Pictures
3. Right-Click or Control-Click the Photos Library
4. In the pop-up menu select Show Package Contents
5. Click on the Masters folder and the photos are in there organized by year/month/day
6. It is a hidden folder

When I made the move when it first came out, my albums of my extended family, which included hundreds of scanned old photos, sorted by the date taken, were all rearranged to the date of the photo, which in the scanned photos was the date scanned. So now my albums were all rearranged, and manually resorting them would have taken days. I called Apple, no way around it I was told. So am still with IPhoto. I carry about 20,000 pics on my IPad, it is the primary way I share photos with folks. When I sync it with my Mac, I have a choice, IPhoto or Photos, can’t do some from one and some from the other.

So for those reasons, I have yet to make the switch.

You should have a folder in your HD with the Photos from iPhoto. Copy it to drives or a cloud or both.
I am very disappointed with Photos iPhoto was very good. Photos takes it upon itself create groups
of photos from dates or subjects. So i get a pic of our downed tree with photo of my grandkids.

I may be wrong about this check it out. I just took all my photos and copied to my memory drives.

I keep my large collection in an old folder called Pictures, with several layers of subfolders, arranged alphabetically. I use Adobe Bridge to download new pictures and maintain my collection. I can always find what I want. Don't use the applications Photos or iPhoto, because they want to keep their own library.

I had absolutely no technical issues going from iPhotos to Photos. My chief objection to the the new Photos, is that it won't "connect" to Photoshop Elements the way iPhotos did. In the old iPhotos, I could go into my iPhotos library, and click and drag a photo to the Elements icon on the bottom toolbar whereupon Elements would boot up with the photo loaded and ready for editing. In other words, I was able to set up Photoshop Elements as my iPhotos default editor. Now if I want to do the same, I have to export the file from Photos to a folder on my hard drive, then open Elements and then "browse" to my folder and select the file I want. More steps... I complained to Apple about this, to no avail. I also dislike that when viewing photographs, the Photos background is white, whereas the iPhotos' background was black. Minor issue, I suppose. BTW you can access all your photos through Finder as another Hogger noted, but Photos names each file with a long, random string of letters and numbers and Photos sets the files up in folder, sub-folders, sub-sub-folders, etc. and it's impossible to easily find a photo based on how you numbered or named it. Don't forget Photos is a database, not a file management program, and it stores photo files very differently than you would if you set up your own filing system.
