You mean grand kids and great grand kids don't you. I would venture to guess the average age of many UHH members kids is late thirties to mid forties.
As for new vs old math, the video simply showed a different way to determine the answer, a way that doesn't require memorization of times tables. It's a form of visual calculation used to teach young ones how the numbers relate. Bottom line, one plus one will always equal two regardless of how you get there. When they graduate they will use calculators just like everyone else.

Seems you’re making excuses......it’s not about memorizing tables, this one would have been simple multiplication.
I find it interesting how a different approach to solution a problem, math problem, has generated so much negative responses....

No money for education because THE WALL is of higher priority!
In most towns and cities, 75% of the tax money we pay goes to the school systems. That is a heck of a big chunk of change and we are getting no bang for our buck. The problem is the system not that they aren't getting enough money. We keep throwing money at education and it just keeps getting worse, so it has to be the looney-toon new methods and the much lower standards they have just to make the system look likes it working when it is obviously failing.
I learned my times tables up to 5X no problem, 6x through 9 not so good. Was sort of traumatized by a grade school teacher who assigned (over a vacation period) times tables written a great number of times. When I turned it in, he threw it away right in front of me. I figure 9 and 11 by using 10 and adding or subtracting the original number. (I like checking the product of 9 by its magical properties, the sum will always reduce to 9. Example: 9x3= 27, 2+7=9/ 9x9=81, 8+1=9/ 9x11=99, 9+9=18, 1+8=9 etc)

I hear you, my friend, it's that I am so frustrated with this intelingence-insulting bozo in the WH, that I took the opportunity to went it. I shouldn't have, for this is not my thread. So, PLEASE, don't respond to my shout into the dark on page 5! When I am ready, I'll create my own thread, thank you!

how about progressive addition.
What is "progressive addition" ? Referring to; mathematics, optics, or progressive lenses?

I could comment about why it is being taught like that but then I would be accused of being racist.
Better intuition about math, better problem-solving

Intuition and math are as close to each other as the Milky Way and the Andromeda
it must be difficult to move forward with new concepts

need to go back to school and learn this stuff This is some of what's being taught to your kids, etc. I'm sure when they graduate they will throw out the old math and use this in everyday living? Give me a break ! ! !

Out of curiosity, what was your point?

Maybe I'm just old school. Granddaughter said after showing her the old way, "Papa can you come to my school and teach my teacher how do it faster!" Just say-in.
