For the past few years, I’ve used a D7000 and a D7100. Yesterday I shipped the D7000 and a few other items to mph.com to lower the cost of a “Like new” D500. I’m excited about the extra capabilities that it will provide.

The 500 is a great camera, I have over 164,000 clicks on mine.

Sony a7RII and a5100, Nikon D7100, D300, D700 and a Samsung NX30; 5 Sony lenses, and about 15 Nikon lenses and 2 Samsung lenses.... when I leave the house to shoot, I generally take 2 cameras and 4-6 lenses

The only advice I'd provide for a second body is get something as close to, or identical, to the one that is going to be the primary camera.

Identical: even small differences are frustrating. Then:
1. Both can use the same battery and accessories.
2. You have two bodies to compare, to make sure they are working.
3. When they stop making that camera model, you'll have a source of spare parts.

This question is for you hobbyist's photographers: Do you have a spare body? Yes or No, and if yes what do you have for a back up? For example, if you had D7200 for your primary body, would you go with something different to give you more diversity, like a D5300 with an articulating screen, or another D7200? At times having a second body could be beneficial by allowing the shooter the ability to use 2 different lenses, without having to change lenses, or if your primary body developed a hiccup. I should note that I tried it once (2 bodies and 2 different lenses (18-140 & 150-600) shooting wildlife in Yellowstone), not real enthused with the results. I had better luck with one body and an 18-400.

I started out with a Nikon D5000 & 18-55 lens. Next I bought an 18-300 lens. This kit remains my backup. My next camera was a D7100; which I sold when I upgraded to a D500. I’ve never taken two cameras at the same time to any event. If I was a professional, I think I would have two D500’s (each with a different lens).

I have old DSLRs. A Sony a350 and a Sony a230. I got the a230 as second body to use as a backup, nit 2 cameras at once. I have already had one instance when the a350 died on an assignment, and I was so happy t0 have a backup. "Don't leave home without it." >Alan

For over 50 years, my practice has been that my most recently retired camera body is my spare camera body. It and the lenses assigned to it sit in their camera bag right next to the primary 'team' in my closet - ready to go if needed.

When I upgraded to a D7000 my D40 was my backup. When I got my D7200. The D7000 became the backup. I gave the D40 to my brother. Im guessing he’s hoping I’ll pull that trigger on the D500. (In the works but back-burnered while I invested on an MFT setup.

I have the Nikon D850 and also a D500. The D500 is used primarily for birding, when the 300/2.8 and 200-500 come in really handy because of the crop sensor factor.

I too used two bodies for wildlife at Yellowstone. Those animals come up close to you sometimes and you don't have time to be changing lenses. 18-200 D7100 & 200-500 D500. It worked out well.

This has been an interesting discussion to follow. It appears that the folks who have more than one functional camera body fall into one of two groups...one group hangs on to an older body as a spare in case of failure of the active body, and the other group actively carries and uses two (or more) bodies in a planned and purposeful manner. Both seem to me to be valid and useful approaches. (And yes, I've ignored those who just happen to still have one or more old cameras still around as part of a formal or informal collection. Also a valid approach.)

I did not have a spare body until I bought my first D7100; that's when my D300 became my spare. Eventually sold the D300 to get a second D7100. I have not kept any Nikon DSLR that had more than 13,000 shutter actuations on it. When I jumped into the deep end of the pool and got a D850, I sold off the older of the D7100's. For now I like having one cropped sensor body because of the extra reach as some have pointed out. When my 18-200 DX VR stopped working, I did not replace it; instead got an FX lens. I use the D850 for landscape work; the D7100 for other things and some long range landscape work. I am not a fan of changing lenses outdoors; that is also why I prefer having two bodies; so I have two systems ready to go. I do have a couple of manual focus Nikkors (made in Japan) from film days; they work much better on the D850 than on the D7100. IF I win the lottery, I might sell off the D7100 and get a second full frame Nikon body.
